Chapter 1: Into the Flame
Into the flames rising out of a setting sun,
I draw in a deep breath before I run.
The rhythm of those words pounded through my mind like a drum, keeping time with my heart as I stood at the open door of the plane. The roar of the wind drowned out everything else, even the distant thrum of gunfire below. The sun hung low on the horizon, bleeding red and orange across the sky as if the world itself was on fire.
I glanced at my squadmates, their faces masked by goggles and determination. We were brothers in arms, bound by the shared weight of our mission and the uncertainty of what waited below.
