Visions - A 'Between The Stars' Short Story
Her glowing hair flowed like water. Amber and auburn glints sharply stung Darrius' eyes. He'd go blind if he had to just to keep his gaze tied to her. He didn't mind at all.
"Dee, did you hear a thing I said?!", Lana exclaimed.
"Yes.", Darrius replied quickly trying to break his catatonic state. Darrius had, in fact, not heard a word that passed through Lana's lips. She stared at him blankly waiting for him to quote anything she said but he couldn't even form a sentence at this point. He was enthralled by her. Her voice was an intoxicating nectar that he'd happily binge. But this time when she spoke there was a rancid annoyance in her voice. Darrius tried to break the spell he was under to keep pace in the dialogue but the harder he concentrated the futher away her voice seemed to slip. He strained and finally pressed open his eyelids.
"And hopefully she'll be just like you.", Lana smiled as her words rang out. Darrius smiled back at her focusing on her eyes.
"Hopefullly she'll be as kind and beautiful as her mother.", he said. The air around them seemed to heat up intensely. Darrius was sweating profusely but Lana seemed unphased. Dizziness crept into Darrius' head and everything began to spin.
"Dad!", a female voice screamed. "Dad, wake up! We have to go!", the voice shouted again with more urgency.
"Lana?", Darrius breathed quietly.
"No, dad. It's Xalarah.", the young woman replied wiping the sweat from his forehead. Darrius opened his eyes once again to behold a new face. The pale, oval face of Lana punctuated by Darrius' thick shapely eyebrows and piercing dark eyes.
"Lana?", Darrius asked again.
"Dad, mom has been dead for ten years.", the girl replied with Lana's exact annoyed tone.
