Karina

"It's a girl! "
The doctor gushed, placing the wailing infant on the woman's chest.
She heaved trying to catch her breath in the aftermath of her gruelling labour. Tears of pain mingled briefly with tears of joy before dissolving into tears of sadness.
She had once again given birth to a girl! Her third daughter. What would her husband and in-laws do to her now?...
Jazmin thought long and hard about her options. The baby was so beautiful and precious, but she knew she couldn't keep her. She held the baby close and pressed a kiss to her cheek. After beckoning the nurse over, she placed the baby in her arms.
"Even though she's beautiful, I can't keep her. Are there any forms to fill out for adoption?"
The nurse looked deeply into Jazmin's eyes before replying. "Is that what you really want to do? You seem a little indecisive?"
Jazmin whispered, "No. My husband would beat me and possibly kill the child if I bring her home. She's our third daughter. My husband demanded a son, but . . ."
"I see. . . ." The nurse, Matilda, spoke with a slight hesitation. "Is there anything I can do to help make things easier?"
Jazmin asked quietly. "Do you know of anyone personally who could adopt her, and care about her?"
Matilda thought about her question. The said, "I recently lost my own daughter to leukemia and . . . was hoping to have another child . . . but I can't. I would be more than willing to adopt yours, if you'd like."
"I was wondering if we could do it secretly. . . . and if you could use Karina as one of her names? I always wanted to name one of my other daughters Karina, but my husband Enrico insisted on naming them himself."
"Yes. Consider it done then."
So under darkness of night, the women made a pact in silence, and Karina was given a new mother plus another chance at life.
After recovering from her pregnancy, Jazmin made a long sojourn home. When she arrived home, she told Enrico, her inlaws, and her nosy neighbors, that the baby was stillborn. Furthermore, since the doctor had given her a good bill of health, after a year of mourning they tried again. This time the baby was a healthy boy. She named him Casper without consulting Enrico about the naming of the child.
After a week's recovery, Jazmin signed the release papers, took her little boy with her and disappeared. No one -- except Matilda -- ever saw her or the baby again.
A week later, Enrico received the divorce papers in the mail without a forwarding address.
