A VIVID MEMORY OF MY CHILDHOOD
Being a smart and intelligent child with a seemingly fast educational pursuit has always put me in people's good book but then my small stature would find it's way to humiliate me especially among my peers.
This incident happened when I was seven years old and my dad decided to change my school to a better one. I was so excited about the new school because it was bigger and more equipped than the one I was attending; dad said so anyways. I looked forward to starting the school every single day because I was so happy and my mum's workplace is closer to the school.
Then, the d-day came, my mum took my siblings and I to the school for registration and we were told that we would be taking an entrance exam. When I was asked the class I was applying for and I told the teacher in charge that it was Basic four, she was surprised and skeptical about even allowing me to write the exam. She told my mum that there was no way a seven year old child would write their school's entrance exam to basic four and passed but my mum insisted and she allowed me write. Eventually, I passed the exams and the teacher later became my favourite in the school.
Fast forward to what made this incident and evergreen one, we were enrolled in the summer classes of the school so as to get familiar with the environment and our prospective classmates. I was so happy when we were leaving home that morning but everything changed when I got to the school.
I was just an intelligent child but I was also very shy and rarely talk to people unless it was extremely necessary. As the teacher instructed one of my classmates to take me to the classroom, a feeling of nervousness ran through me and I wasn't feeling the excitement of the new school anymore. The girl was tall and a very nice person too, she made me so comfortable and I was relieved.
Then as we were about entering the classroom, I was scared again. As soon as I entered, the other kids greeted the girl warmly and I concluded that they were nice children not until two mischievous boys decided to ruin everything.
The first one was like, 'Fatia(the tall girl's name), is this your younger sister?' I was furious why would he call me her younger sister, was I that small? The girl went ahead to explain that I was a new pupil in their class, then the second boy said ' this small girl? I'm sure she can't recite multiplication table two'. I couldn't take it anymore as I burst into hot tears (I've always been a cry baby). Immediately, all the girls in the class came around me and made me comfortable, some of them even went ahead to insult the boys.
The main reason why this incident remains vivid in my memory is because on the school's prize giving ceremony, I was awarded the prize for the first position and the best pupil in English language. I was so happy and proud of myself then, I went ahead to look for the boy with the big mouth, it's time for him to taste a dose of his own medicine.
When I saw him I said, ' this is the girl that you were sure couldn't recite multiplication table two but got two prizes and I know you're good at it, show me your prize', he couldn't say anything because he didn't win any prize.
