The Fortune of Friendship
Kavya suddenly woke up with a start. The train had come to a stop at a station. She had fallen asleep with the comforting and familiar rocking of the train. She checked her watch in panic. Had she missed her stop? It was 4:00 p.m.! She should have alighted at her station at 3:30. She must have over-shot it. She hurriedly gathered her things, stuffing it haphazardly into her bags, and rushed out of the train. She looked around in confusion at where she was.

Her mind froze but her heart beat at a dangerously rapid pace. She has never had to encounter such a fate before. She is someone who lives by the laws of time. This one time, things had taken a completely different turn for her, and she has never succumbed to change before. She whimpered incessantly as she roamed aimlessly at the station. Her vision was entirely blurred with tears.

As she rubbed her tear-stained eyes and looked around the half-empty station, she saw a boy of about seventeen sobbing silently in the far end of the station. His eyes were blood-red and he looked like he was internally having a nervous breakdown.

She approached him and gently tapped him on the shoulder. He glanced at her blankly for a moment, and then closed his eyes to weep in silence. She asked for his name but he didn't respond. She asked him if she could be of any help to him, but again, no answer. An uncomfortable silence filled the air and she knew she had to stop him from throwing a pity party in public.

She stood beside him for several minutes, but he was not willing to open up to her. She randomly looked up, heaved a deep sigh and uttered that she had missed her stop, and she did not where she was. She told him that this occurred because she overslept. She chuckled awkwardly and said that she had learnt an important lesson from this experience and that is to never sleep in trains. He suddenly stared at her in wonder and stopped sobbing that very minute. She was utterly surprised by his reaction. She asked him if he had had a similar experience sometime in his past.

The boy turned pink with embarrassment and said that he was sobbing because he had fallen victim to this experience just moments ago. He stopped crying now. He felt like he had a companion to share his ill-fate and there they were sitting side by side in solitude. He introduced himself as Karthik. They both took turns sharing their unfortunate experiences.

It felt relieving to share this miserable moment with another soul and know that they are not alone in this. They soon joked about it and the day rather became a pleasant one for the both of them. He confessed to her that he was extremely antisocial and that he felt uneasy in public spaces. He just wanted to get back home in time for the holidays, sleep in his comfy cot and forget all about this day.

She too had a similar story to share with him. She told him that she had panic attacks in public and she always stood out like a sore thumb during family gatherings. They revealed their ugly secrets to each other in less than an hour, but they were complete strangers to each other.

Kavya thought this was this was too unrealistic for her as an introvert. This day went from being disastrous to miraculous in just sixty minutes. It’s funny how life is so unpredictable. Kavya smiled at Karthik and thought to herself, Maybe changes are not all that bad....... I might just get used to them!

In the face of their own misfortunes, they had found the fortune of friendship in each other.
