THE GIRL NEXT DOOR : part 3
“We have been celebrating in same manner at grandparent's house since ages. I love it. Meeting all my cousins, realtives, lots of food, and all. My parents planned to come here on 10th for shopping too.” Anu said.

“Is it! We have some family issues. I just wear new clothes and stay with my mom and dad. Not much memorable!” Sam sighed.

“Let's celebrate together and explore all shades this year! ” Anu smiled.

“Is it! Thank you Anu for staying here. Ooh, we have to wait for poll results though! ” Sam said gleaming.

As the days passed obviously Anu and Sam became close friends. They might have other friends but they were extremely comfortable with each other.

.............................…

More than half of the students stayed back in hostel including the quintet.

They all split into different groups and started working for event the evenings.

The day had arrived. And yeah they celebrated Bhogi together in the early morning. Girls dressed up up traditionally, they tried singing folk songs and they enjoyed that part more.

Anu wore a half Saree and looked stunning. Sam wore a new long modal chudidhar and looked graceful.

They was chirping and cheerings of students and staff in the air.

Professors and other staff had come there with their families on Principal's request. Importance and how to celebrate the festival and importance were explained. It was really a good day for all. Girls rushed to their hostels by 7pm like always.

And they celebrated sankranthi in the same way.

Rishi and Arun didn't come on the Kanuma day. When Sam enquired, Arun said Rishi was upset as his mother met with an accident. “He wasn't willing to talk to anyone since morning.”

“Oh God! How is she now?” Sam and Anu were worried.

“She is all good. Actually it happened yesterday and they told him toady morning, so that he wouldn't be worried. Rishi want to go and see his mom, but she denied. ” Arun continued.

Sam phone called Rishi but he was reluctant to talk. He cut the call saying he would be okay politely.

Sam and Anu rushed to be a part of event.

Anyhow the day was not at all good for any of them.

..................................................

The night Anu asked Sam “ Where do Rishi's parents stay?”

“Actually, he was an orphan. His mom adopted him when he was 10 and she was 34. She is a widow by that time. She is a business woman. She didn't agree to remarry, she loves her husband that very much. ” Sam sighed.

Anu looked puzzled and concerned.

“She is like his best friend. They talk everything, he is too attached to her. ” Sam continued.

…...………………….

The next day Sam and Anu had been to college ground to play shuttle in the evening. Arun was playing cricket with boys over there. But Rishi sat on the bench staring at his phone screen. His wallpaper had his photo with mom.

Sam rushed to him and tried to cheer him up.

“No use, ” Arun shouted from distance.

“Let's play with the kids then, ” Anu said pointing at kids in the near by park.

“Yeah! ” Sam smiled.

They both manged to change his mood. Arun too joined them and they had a great time playing in the children's park hiding from watchman.

Rishi looked relaxed. Arun left to join cricket match again.

“I will get two ice-creams and something spicy to eat. ” Sam left.

Anu sat on the bench opposite to Rishi and asked “Your mom had minor injuries I heard. Seems like you are bothered by something else. ”

Rishi looked at her surprised.“ I wonder Sam told you about my my... ” he said.

“I'm sorry. She said you don't want anyone to know about it. I'm really sorry on her behalf too. I promise, I would never utter a word about it..I” Anu felt guilty.

“It's okay. I understand. Even I share everything with Arun.” He comforted her.

Anu was astonished by his maturity.

“My grandma blamed me for this, she thinks I bring badluck as my biological parents left me. She said many things. It hurts be bad. I try my level best but she never accepts me I guess. ” He mumbled.

“ Some people are basically like that. Don't worry, life is unpredictable. She will accept you one day. Even if she doesn't it should bother you actually. ” Anu said assuring.

“My mom says the same often. She said the same today. ” He looked into her eyes and said.

“Okay, go and visit her. You will feel better. She might have denied wondering your grandma would hurt you again. ” She continued.

“I will think about it. Don't say all this to Sam. ” He said.

“Okay! ” Anu said nodding her head.

“I and Arun reached my home yesterday night itself. Feeling very much better after meeting mom. Thanks :-) Anu.” Rishi texted her the next day.

Anu felt much relieved.

....................................

Soon they became busy with their schedules, assignments and club works. Anu and Sam continued their morning walk programme, but never met Rishi.

“Isn't Rishi coming for a jog? ” Anu asked Sam after nearly 2 weeks.

“He is working to create his own YouTube channel to upload dance and singing videos. He will be releasing soon. Untill then it's secret. ” Sam said.

“That's great.” She smiled.

..............................

Anu also started writing a novel interlinking her imagination and experiences of people and daily based incidents. Sam was spending time in the dance club and with her batch mates. Anu suggested to work on some hobby. But Sam ignored.

Three more weeks passed. As Rishi and Anu both were busy, Sam slowly started hanging out more with friends and was partying often. There was slight distance between Anu and Sam now, but that didn't effect their bond.

Time they spent together was comparatively lessened. She was in touch with Rishi and met him often. They talked on phone atleat once a day, if they didn't meet.

.........................

Rishi's first dance video was released. He did a great work and they shot it in good location. The club promoted it well, so did all his friends including Sam and Anu.

“It's a great beginning! Wish you many more such in life,” Anu congratulated him.

“Thanks yaar! It's been a month since we talked. ” Rishi smiled.

“Yeah, and I thought you are more passionate about singing! ” Anu said.

Rishi stood mum for a while wondering how does she know it!

“Yeah, I will do it very soon, ” he said smiling broad.

…………………………………

Soon they got engrossed with mid exams and all.

Rishi continued to post his dance videos and had become talk of college at times.

The days flew within glance.

There were department games too this month. Now everyone gotta spend almost like 20 days with their batch mates.

Third years organised the games and the department day was celebrated by different branches on different dates as per their requirement.

Anu and Sam daily talked about how their day was atleat for a few minutes. They also helped each other in getting ready on D-days.

However Anu and Rishi spent their free time if any, on their hobbies and studies alongside enjoying. Whereas Sam started interacting much with people and scrolling phone. Anu chose, not to pressurise her much.

Well she also got no time to check on what's Sam was doing outside her room, but she kept on suggesting her to be productive often. But Sam ignored it always and was highly influenced by what others were doing around. Sam generally has mood swings issues.

………………………………………

Soon they gave their second semester exams. This time they had holidays for one month.

They all had parted ways to their hometowns. Anu spent holidays meeting her old friends in Rampur and visiting her realtives and cousins. Ofcouse she was in touch with Sam.

Sam went on a vacation with her parents for somedays, met her old friends sometimes. Ofcouse her parents were very modern and they chill together, but they never looked happy with each other in marriage.

Rishi was having great time with his mom and school friends. He did go for vacation. He narrated everything happened in their college to his mom.

Arun was also from same city as Rishi. He was mostly helping his parents. He also gave tuitions to children to earn a boy and support his parents as they weren't having a stable financial support.

Sam was obviously in touch with everyone in the mean time .

They all were relaxed completely to be precise.

………………………………

After the reopening, Sam spread her arms around Anu as soon as they met in the complex like always. Sam went out to meet Rishi and other friends the evening after informing Anu.

Anu felt bit upset as she thought she and Sam would go out and roam on streets like always. She sat in their friend's home wondering why didn't Sam ask her to join.

After hello-ballo, Rishi asked Sam about Anu.

“She is there, in Ritu's home. ” Sam said.

“Why didn't she come with you? Isn't she well? ” Arun asked.

Sam wondered why didn't she ask Anu, about joining her.

…………………………………

What do you think was the reason behind Sam's change in behaviour? How did Anu react?
