THE USE OF PERFUME
TEXT: Ex.30:35-38
KEY VERSE: Isa.57:9 "And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes. and
didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.
Perfumes were used in religious worship, for personal and domestic enjoyment (Ex.30:35-38; Prov.7:17:Isa.
57:9); and also in embalming the dead, and in other funeral ceremonies (Mark 14:8; Luke 24:1; John 19:39)
PERFUME FOR PRIDE AND SEDUCTION
Only sinners that do not know the Lord used perfumes in the Bible for seduction and attraction.
The people of
God never used perfume
Prov.7:17-19 "I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love
until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:"
Isa.57:9 "And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy
messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.
PERFUME FOR BURIAL
Songs of Solomon 3:6 "Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with
myrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?"
We can see that while God said perfume should not
be used on the human body, strangers and heathen were using it in disobedience, because they are children of
disobedience.
Perfumes are also used for burial; our Lord Jesus Christ-confirmed this when Mary poured the ointment on the
Lord. He accepted the ointment in advance only on the account of his burial.
Matt.26:12 "For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial."
John19:39-40 “And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a
mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in
linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury."
Luke 24:1 "Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre,
bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them."
Avoid all kinds of perfumes; this gives false smell to people. God sees those carrying this unnatural smell as
making a lie, for such smell is an artificial make-up and not natural and is condemnable by God.
Take your bath
and care well for your body. Don't use perfume.
Rev.21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth., neither whatsoever worketh
abomination, *or maketh a lie:* but they which are writen in the Lamb's book of life "
Rev.22: 15 "For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers. and idolaters, and
whosoever loveth *and maketh a lie.*
We should not try to cover or replace the natural aura God has put on our human body with an artifcial aura.
God hates make believe and make-ups because by making-up, we tend to show our dislike or rejection for the
natural and showing that we prefer the artificial to the natural by that we have declared the natural to be inferior
to the artificial.
