SUITCASE
"Wake up!wake up! Go to the market immediately. There's hardly any vegetables left in the fridge. What will I cook?Wake up!",said Supriya to me.
I woke up at once, yawning. It was Sunday and I was not in a mood to go to the market but due to my wife's anger,I had to go."Pritam, take this list of vegetables with you.",said my wife,Supriya before I went out.
Heading towards the market, I came across a quarrel between an old beggar and a man. I stopped there to see what the matter was."Give me your suitcase",said the man harshly. The old beggar said,"Who are you to take my property? Don't dare to steal it" I wondered why that man was wanting the beggar's suitcase.
"Old man, what would you do with this suitcase? You are too old now to die anyday. Give it to me.",exclaimed the man.The old man responded,"Go away!I will never give this to anybody until I die."
When the police came to see what was going on there ,the man ran away. But I was curious to know about the matter. I asked a person who was standing beside me,seeing the conflict. He told me that everyone believed that the old beggar owned some precious property in his suitcase as some people had seen something sparkling when the old man used to open it.
The person also added that this was not the first time that the beggar was asked for the suitcase. There were many greedy people who wanted that suitcase. I went back home after marketing.
The next day while returning home,I came across that old beggar once again. The old beggar, who was sitting along the roadside in his tattered clothes, was holding his dust-covered black suitcase tightly in his hands. I went forward to give him some money but he seemed to be afraid of me.He said,"Go away!I don't need your money." I noticed the old beggar to be tired and his face was also swollen. I went back home but the thought of that old man was flashing in my mind.
The next morning when I went to the market, I came across a different scenario that day which I never thought to be. A huge crowd gathered around the dead body of the old beggar. Later,I came to know that while the old beggar was crossing the road, a car hit him from the back which resulted in his death. I noticed that everybody's eye was on the suitcase rather than the old man's dead body.
Suddenly,a man in the crowd said,"Let's open the suitcase as now the beggar is no more." The suitcase was opened."What's this?",the man said, taking out a portrait from the suitcase. It was the portrait of an old lady framed with glass. Everyone was speechless.
At the back of the portrait, there was written "My wife,I miss you."Another man in the crowd said,"May be that old lady had died but the old man's love still existed for her. True love really exists. The old man used to keep the suitcase safely with him as he loved her a lot."
Tears came out of my eyes......
