In cases of married couples, the wife is known as the 'better half' or 'ardhaangini'(in hindi). 'Ardh' means half & 'ang' means body. Male & female, or 'yin' & 'yang' (chinese), together form a complete body. Our body is symmetrical. But the left side is a bit different from the right half. The only difference between the two halves of the body is that our heart, being located in the centre of the body, is tilted towards the left side. The heart symbolises true love & it keeps us alive even when we're brain-dead. Therefore the left side of the body is considered to be the better side. But it's also true that a person cannot survive without half the body, so both sides of the body are important. Now, whenever a male & a female are getting married, then in all religions, the bride's place is always on the left of the groom. Even when a married lady writes her full name, she writes her name first on the left & adds her husband's name after that on the right side of her name. So the wife is the better half, or the 'Sweet' heart of the husband, & the husband makes the wife complete.
