Remember me by- page 1
"I am 2 weeks pregnant". A messenger pop-up suddenly apparated on my phone screen.

"Congratulations! I am happy for you". I typed back.

I tossed my phone onto my bed and poured myself first of the many upcoming drinks.

I walked out into the balcony. I stood there and watched the moving traffic. I saw people coming from or going to their homes. I saw lives moving in two directions and I noticed my glass empty.

I looked around and found the bottle I had kept on the table.

I relaxed into the chair beside the table and poured another drink. I opened the book that I had brought along to read.

Hours later... I woke up to the sound of rainfall. It was still half past midnight. I must have dozed off after 3-4 pages. The book had fallen off my lap. I grabbed the book in one hand, the bottle of whisky along with the glass in the other, and hurried in.

I tossed the book onto the bed beside the phone and put the glass in the kitchen sink. It wasn't raining heavily but I was still wet. I dried myself with the towel and went to bed. I was laying on my back with my eyes closed, struggling to sleep. Unable to sleep, I moved my hand around to get hold of my phone but I couldn't feel it so I turned to my left to locate it. The phone was at the far end corner of the bed so I got up and reached for it.

The book laid beside the phone was open on the very first page that had a note that read; " Something to always remember me by. I hope you would never need it".

My face twitched into a smile. I remembered the book, I remembered the evening before the book and the note that was left for me.

It was a usual evening. Just another weekend from the hundreds of weekends before. It was raining like today. I was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables to cook when the doorbell rang.

I came out of the kitchen and opened the door. There she was, out of nowhere, standing at the door and sneezing uncontrollably. I laughed as she tickled her nose. She pushed me back and stormed in.
"Stop laughing and give me a towel?", she demanded. Her clothes were soaking wet and she was dripping all over the floor.

"Here. take this and get changed. There is the bathroom." I said as I pointed in a direction.

By the time she came back, I had our dinner laid out on the table.

She came out drying her hair. The water had washed off all the remaining makeup and what I was looking at was the raw beauty. It didn't come to me as a surprise. I had always thought that makeup dulled her natural beauty but she always laughed it off.

"Come join", I invited her sliding a chair back.

"Always a gentleman.", She smiled, pinched my cheek, and took the chair at the dinner table.

We ate and we talked about all the good and bad times, friends and family. We even talked about the weather.

"It was a long journey. You must be tired by now. That is my room. You can put your bags there and sleep in. I will take the couch." I said to her in the midst of clearing the table and putting the dishes in the sink.

I washed the dishes and went on to camp on the couch.

It was 11 at night. I had my headphones on and was reading a book. "Reading before bed is", a bad habit I contracted from her.

The lights of her room were off but I could still hear the sound of T.V which meant that she was awake.

I kept reading for another hour but when the sound didn't stop, I got up and knocked on her door.

"You don't have to knock on the door to come in. This is your house. Remember?" she looked at me.

"I know but this is called manners." I quipped.

"Why are u awake?", I questioned. I climbed up onto the bed beside her.

"Nothing," she replied and rested her head in my lap.

"Look at me." I lifted her head from my lap.

"What?", she asked in a pissed-off tone.

"Something is bothering you. I want to know what it is?", I demanded.

She stared at me for a few seconds then got up to leave.

"I am just tired and sleepless. That's it. There is nothing to worry about", she answered walking towards the door.

I knew she was lying but I knew better than to force her to tell the truth.

"Okay. If you say so. Just come back to bed now." I withdrew.

She climbed back and curled up in my arms. She closed her eyes and gave into the slumber. I could feel the warmth of her every exhale on my chest.

My body was accustomed to this feeling. It was accustomed to her. It was only then I realized that my body had been yearning for more than food. It was yearning for this familiar proximity.

I fell asleep too.

I woke to the sensation of a touch soft as a feather and light as air on my lips. My eyes opened to the sight of a magnitude of beauty that even the complex imaginative mind of any renowned painters and sculptors could not even fathom.

Two eyes wide as the oceans and deep as the secrets of the universe were staring at my face.

Her expression so timid and her lips parted to incite the act of domination were a couple of inches above my face. My eyes could feast upon her beauty until eternity but eternity is not what we have. All we have are moments fleeting along with every breath we draw.

My eyes blinked and then they met, the lips kissed the souls. She closed her eyes and gave in to the moment. Something she had never done before. I had never seen her so unrestrained, so free. Before that kiss, her eyes always had caution and lips restrains. They (eyes) were always open to keep the distance in check.

My body froze and so as my ability to react. I realized too late that she mistook my inability as my apathy.

"Embarrassed", she moved her face away and got off the bed.

"Sorry.", She apologized and turned towards the door to leave.

My eyes followed her every step silently until she grabbed the doorknob and as she turned it to open the door, my heartbeat rose and the following words broke out of my closed lips:

“He stepped down, trying not to look long at her, as if she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking.” I quoted Leo Tolstoy.

She stopped and turned back.

To be continued.
