Children's Stories #006 Dragons
Thousands of years ago, a merchant was travelling from Alexandria to Baghdad. One the way he met another merchant travelling in the same direction. This second merchant was travelling from Rome to Baghdad. They decided to travel together and exchange stories. The first merchant was called Tol and the second was called Leo.

Tol told Leo about all the wildlife in Africa. Leo was particularly excited when Tol told him about Ostriches.

"Ostriches are as tall as us humans. They have a small head, long neck, a round body and slender legs. They are black and white in color. They cannot fly." said Tol.

"That is unbelievable." said Leo.

"I can show you their eggs," said Tol. Then, he produced an ostrich egg carefully wrapped in his sack. Leo was surprised to see it.

Leo was excited to see it. He also bought an egg from Tol for keepsake. When they reached Baghdad the merchants went their separate ways. Leo went to meet an Indian merchant named Rishi. After their usual barter. The merchants exchanged news and stories from either side.

Leo told Rishi about Ostriches. But he couldn't pronounce the name correctly.

"Ostrigons are bigger than humans. They come in bright colors. They soar the skies of Africa." said Leo to Rishi.

"I don't believe that," said Rishi.

Leo showed him the egg and Rishi had to believe it. Rishi asked for the egg but Leo refused to sell it. The merchants parted.

Rishi set off to China. When he reached there. He conducted his business as usual and discussed news and stories. Rishi told them about the Ostriches (or Ostrigons). His pronunciation was rough as well.

"Drastigons are bigger than elephants. They have huge multi colored wings. They can fly over the tallest mountains and vastest seas." said Rishi.

"Don't they get cold." asked a Chinese merchant named Chan.

"They probably have fire in their body." said another merchant.

Rishi left for home. The Chinese merchants met the king's bard and told him about this new bird.

"Dragons are huge beasts with wide wings. They come in all colors. They can breathe fire." said the merchants to the bard.

The bard set out to write several poems and verses about this animal to impress the King.

That is how dragons came into existence.
