A Grave Mistake
#WritcoStoryPrompt18
The mouse crept through the silent house in search of its nightly meal. It's ears pricked at the scream, causing it to stand on its hind legs to spot the source. When the body came crashing down, it scampered away with its tiny heart beating fiercely.

A woman with pursed lips and eyes too bright to be called sane looked at the man she had just pushed down the stairs with almost a hint of enjoyment. A puddle of blood had formed around his head, suggesting his immediate departure from this world.

"A long lost sister?" she exclaimed with amusement," Did he think I was a lunatic? He ran off with the first girl who showed an interest in him and claimed her as his sister to cover his sins. I am not as naive as he has thought me to be."

The telephone started ringing in another room and the woman turned pale as she had not thought of a lie to cover up her crime yet. She hoped none of her neighbours had reported the screaming, or even worse, the sudden silence that followed.
"Hello?" she said in the sweetest voice she could muster.
It was her mother in law at the other end of the line. She seemed to be in a state and could barely get her words out. "I never thought this would happen to me, what a shame he has brought on our family. The girl had a birth certificate and DNA results, they have my husband's name on them. I knew there was something suspicious about his work trip eighteen years ago. Can you believe this? All this time, your husband has had a half sister."

The woman turned paler than before, and fainted right onto the pool of blood beside her husband's head, she had made a grave mistake.
