Chapter one.

Adaline had witnessed Dean make out with her best friend Caroline, in his apartment. Although they didn't see her coming in on them, neither are they aware of her going out. She had waited a week for Dean to be honest about his feelings in their relationship, but instead he broke up with her. Dean never mentioned his flings with Caroline, so did Caroline never mention Adaline. Both acted as if nothing had happened between them that was beyond the kiss.

"I trusted those two. How could they betray me?"

Adaline murmured to herself as she sat in front of a big dressing mirror. She appeared pathetic, rather lost, and insane of what had happened to her. Not once had she ever thought her relationship with Dean would come to an end. They met in the first year of college at UCLA. He had wooed her, and she ignored at first.

Dean was such a sweet tongue. It's like he composes his pickup lines as song lyrics before singing out to the ears of his crush. He never took anything serious before in his life, but when he saw Adaline walked into lecture room, he completely fell for her charms, and made her a mandate he had to complete.

Everything went well according to his plan, he had made Adaline fall in love with him. They went on with their relationship for seven years now with the hope of getting married very soon, or it is only Adaline that has that in mind. Both never made a pledge to be married to each other, since they are against marriage as a concept, but as time went by; Adaline felt she needed to be with him for the rest of their lives.

"You said you were against marriage, but you went and proposed to her?".

Adaline cried while watching herself In the mirror. She heard from others that after the breakup, Dean had proposed to Caroline, which is so out of the box. Adaline couldn't believe what she heard, but she confirmed anyway.

"How could you, you motherfuckers!!"

Not only did she give him her youth, she also gave Dean her innocence. It's still fresh in the memory, when both had their first sex together. He was not a virgin, but Adaline was. She made a promise to her mother that she will keep her virginity till marriage, and will not violate herself until then. Although, she knew if she wanted to have sex, she doesn't need a permission to do so, but she was just being careful of what happened to her older sister Nene, might happened to her. Nene had gotten pregnant when she was sixteen for her high school boyfriend. This incident had drifted the relationship between mother and daughter apart, and made their mother more stern and firm with Adaline. If Adaline ever had sex and get pregnant, that would be the end of their family ties. Ironically, their mother also had them when she was seventeen, but feared that her daughters would have a tough life that she led all these while.

Having sex was not the only rule Adaline had broken, Infact, she had gotten pregnant, but had no choice but to have an abortion, which was a painful experience both physically and mentally. Since both never wanted to have children nor get married in the future, Adaline had no other choice but to let go of the baby. Night after night after the incident, she had nightmares of seeing her baby chasing and crying after her, even if all these were self guilt, she went to a church to confess her sins.

While in deep thought, Adaline heard a knock on her door. She had ordered an item online and had arrived, she thought. But a fine gentleman in a black suit had moved next door to her apartment and wanted to make a friendly visit.

"Who are you?"; she questioned

The fine gentleman stuttered with words, he had never seen anyone as beautiful as Adaline. It was love at first sight for him, even though she appeared moody, and sad, still she is still the best looking person he had ever met.

"I...I...I..just moved in here. My name is John!".

He stretched out his hands for a handshake, but got rejected as Adaline closed the door on him.

"What a temper for a pretty lady!".

He blushed because of Adaline's action. In his mind he thought of a childish desire; he wished Santa had brought him here for a reason, and hoped he would become closer to his beautiful neighbour who wouldn't give me a chance to introduce herself.

CHAPTER TWO.

Without thinking much, Adaline decided to take a walk outside. She needed to breathe and feel alive, even though life has no meaning to her anymore.

She left her apartment wearing a loose cloth but a winter coat. Winter this year has been unfair to everyone, the outside is as cold as to the north or the south pole. People are freezing both inside and outside. But because of the recession, it was very difficult and hard for most families to turn on the heater, since most feared the bill might go up. Wearing a padded winter coat and layers of clothes has been the new solution to beating this wicked cold of winter.

Winter, has it matter to some people, it does not have an effect on Adaline. She doesn't even know if she had her heater on, nor did she care if she wore a padded coat. All that matters to her was her heart break. If she knew, she would have more dating experience before meeting Dean. She doesn't know how to handle heartbreak, and if she did, her best friend also betrayed her. There is absolutely no one there to ease her pain. All she would ever need was a company and a bottle of tequila. Unfortunately, she has no boyfriend nor a best friend.

She walked past the new handsome neighbor, but gave him no attention. It was like the person she walked past doesn't exist nor have they met. If one told her she met with him earlier, she would have denied and said never. Her state of mind was broken, and she had no hope. As a child, she would have wished for something in the Christmas spirit. But, her own spirit is long gone. From a guess, Adaline would never know that Christmas was the day after.

John followed her but avoided getting noticed by Adaline. Even if he made it weird, it was a sure fact that Adaline still wouldn't give him the attention.

From the back, he admired the woman of his dreams. From their first encounter, he could picture them both together, laughing and cracking jokes. He hoped Adaline would smile at him, so as to melt his loving heart more, but Instead he still preferred the mean look Adaline gave him earlier. He thought that was sexy and intriguing, he had never met a woman who never thought of his existence before. She was like a mystery to him, a hard nut to crack.

Unlike Adaline, most of the female neighbors; both single and married, have been friendly with him for no reason. His charming smiles had melted their Christmas hearts, and had brought a Christmas joy to everyone in the apartments. Only if Adaline would see him that way, he wished.

CHAPTER THREE.

Adaline sat in a chair to rethink her actions. Without knowing, tears dropped down her cheeks. She recalled her mother's last words before she died;

"No matter what, Adaline, please don't give up!".

She broke into tears hearing the words over and over again in her head. Her heart becomes heavy and sad. She had difficulty with breathing, she inhaled and exhaled out viciously.

"I'm so sorry mom! So sorry!"

She cried not minding her environment, as everyone who sat with her on the bench watched in awe. John also witnessed the scene, he felt sad for someone he doesn't know, but cared about. He wanted to run to her and hug her, but he couldn't move an inch from where he watched. He imagined himself consoling Adaline of her worry, he imagined both of them hugging it out in the cold weather, and as their gentle lips touched each other. But in reality, he wouldn't dare do that to a woman that doesn't even know of his existence.

Adaline became calm as she watched some little children played with snow. She smiled brightly but still sad. She recalled when she discovered she was pregnant. It was like a miracle, she couldn't believed at first, and tried convincing herself that it was just stress. But it wasn't, Infact she was two weeks gone already. She hadn't seen her period for a week, and blamed the first year of college to be stressful. If she had lived at home with her mother, her mother would have noticed. But thank God, she didn't.

"You can't be pregnant. Are you sure it is?". Dean questioned.

They both had protected themselves while doing it, but during a friend's house party, one thing led to another, and both made love without proper protection, which resulted in the pregnancy.

"We can't just bring pregnancy into the relationship. You know we don't believe in marriage and having kids, so why are you saying you're pregnant?".

Dean bombarded her with questions upon questions, and in the end, both had no choice but to terminate the pregnancy.

If they both had a kid, maybe it wouldn't have been the end of their relationship, Adaline wondered as she returned back to her apartment.

She waited for her package to be delivered and had made a conclusion in her mind.

CHAPTER FOUR.

John arrived at Adaline's door, he pressed and knocked multiple times on her door, but received no reply. He knew something would happen and would want to stop it from happening. He had a package in his hands and seemed to have belonged to Adaline.

He tried breaking into the apartment, but was stopped by an old Lady who lived next door. She informed him that Adaline had left the house about twenty minutes ago.

"Twenty minutes ago?".

He ran out of the apartment as if he was chased out. He couldn't even wait for the elevator, but took the stairs down. He imagined Adaline killing herself, and seeing her lifeless body made him cluttered in fears. He must save Adaline before it's too late. He wanted to be a hope to her, and for many more years to come. He wouldn't have been that way if he hadn't gone through the package sent earlier mistakenly to his apartment. What he saw was alarming, and had concluded at Adaline might be suffering from depression or such to the extent that she wanted to commit suicide.

"Adaline!!!! Where are you??"

John shouted as he called out the name of his beloved. He would never forgive himself if something bad ever happened to her. He had looked around everywhere, searched every neighborhood, but couldn't find Adaline. He even made a call to the police, to help find Adaline. Everyone he comes across the way strikes a resemblance of Adaline to him, until people started calling him names, he had to stop.

He returned home to find the police cars in his neighborhood, but still Adaline was out of reach. As he blamed himself and cursed out, Adaline appeared like a miracle. She looked wretched and cold. She had gone out without a coat, and her whole being was a mess. All she needed was someone on her side.

For as she had imagined, John ran to and hugged her like she was dear to him. Everyone watched in awe and the two cried in each other's arms.

"I really don't want to die, I want to live"..

Adaline cries out loud in John's arms. She felt a consoling comfort from his embrace. She knew for sure that she matters to the person who embraced her dearly. As her eyes became heavy, she became unconscious, and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. With her was John, and forever will be..

Merry Christmas!!
