Bone Closet
This afternoon, whilst I was sitting on my bed, a voice called out to me from the unassuming closet across the room. It spoke in a broken and raspy tone that made the hairs on my body stand at attention. I was frozen with fear, not because the voice spoke to me, but because the voice I heard was my own. Distorted, sure, but mine all the same. A throaty growl began to rumble through the air, it seemed to come from everywhere. I quickly covered my ears and squeezed my eyes shut and outwardly began to squeal "this isn't real, this isn't real, this isn't-" The closet door exploded open with enough force to throw it from it's hinges but instead left the doors hanging neatly in place in full open position. A figure could be seen standing in the darkness, somehow darker than blackness that surrounded it... Squinting my eyes to get a better look, I lean forward unknowingly as the figure took a step forward into the doorway of the room which now suddenly felt 40 degrees colder. My breathe fogged and swirled in the air in front of my eyes as it escaped my lips. I noticed that the figure was taller than I initially thought as he began ducking down to step through the doorway...
It had no eyes, but a sinister smile began to form on it's face where it's mouth would be, gnarly yellowed teeth lined it's thin black lips, tendrils of saliva glistened as it dribbled down his long pointed fang-like teeth... A slender pink tongue licked the air like a whip, darting quickly from the beings slightly parted lips as it stopped walking forward and was now slowly leaning toward over the end of my bed. I couldn't move, I couldn't breathe, the pungent stench of death wafting from it's razor toothed mouth singed my nostrils. Almost as if reading my mind, the shadow stopped inches from my face. It's mouth flung open, his jaw unhinging as a thunderous roar erupted from it and began baring all of its teeth, saliva hit me in the face soaking my shirt and caking my eyes.
As the creature's roar echoed through the room, I felt a sudden surge of energy and managed to scramble off the bed and onto the floor. I stumbled backward, still blinded by the thick saliva that had coated my eyes, my heart pounding so hard I thought it might burst out of my chest.
The creature continued to roar, its jaws snapping and gnashing as it turned to face me. I could see now that it had long, clawed fingers and a muscular, hulking frame, covered in what looked like scales or spines. Its eyes were hidden in shadow, but I could feel their intense, malevolent gaze fixed on me.
I knew I had to do something, anything to protect myself. But as I fumbled blindly for something, anything to use as a weapon, the creature began to move towards me, its every step sending a tremor through the floor.
My hand closed around something cold and hard - a lamp, I realized. I raised it up, holding it like a makeshift club, and braced myself for the creature's attack. But it never came. Instead, the creature stopped in its tracks, its jaws snapping shut with a loud clack.
For a moment, we stood there in silence, the creature and I, both of us poised to strike. But then, to my surprise, the creature spoke.
"Who are you?" it growled, its voice echoing strangely in the small room.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure how to answer. But then I realized that I had a chance - a slim chance, but a chance nonetheless - to escape. Without another word, I turned and ran for the door, the creature's roars and snarls ringing in my ears as I fled into the night.
"Come back" I called out to myself...
