The Debt Repaid: A Second Tale of the Brokers
It's only a matter of time before we need to pay for the things we've done, it all depends on whether we can live with the consequences after. I don't have any regrets, but I can't live with what I've done, because my choices killed me. In the end, I'm already dead. What was surprising, was waking up again.
When I woke up, the room was dark, but for some reason, I could see everything... The wooden floor under my body was cold, but blanket I was wrapped in kept out the chill. Until I saw the man I'd made a deal with three nights before he stopped my heart, and wose yet, he also saw me. I sat up, clutching the blanket around me like I was a kid again, as if it would protect me from the monster in front of me...
I looked at the door on my right, and thought about running, but it was only a fleeting thought. He grinned at me, chasing away all thoughts of escape. Instead, all of my unanswered questions rolled around in my brain, begging for attention...
"Welcome back, love! Did you ejoy your rest?" I blinked at him, and his grin grew wider. "Ah, but you have questions, isn't that right, love?"
I looked at him in confusion. "Why am I still alive?"
The man chuckled, teeth gleaming in the dark. "Well, that's a new one! If I may, love, I think I'll answer that with a question of my own... Do you know what I am?"
I thought back to when I'd thought he had killed me. The pain I had felt when he tore my neck with those teeth... "Vampire." I whispered, feeling my hand reach for wounds that were no longer there.
I heard him chuckle from across the room again. He was sitting with his back against the wall in a chair, at the foot of a bed with an old, stained quilt. His clothes were a little different than when I first met him, but the style was the same- all black, with a cowboy hat covering his eyes.
"Correct. So, to answer your question, love, you are not alive." I felt my body grow cold at his words. "Though nor are you entirely dead either."
"I'm a vampire?" I shuddered, not believing his words, or my own. "You turned me into a vampire?"
His only reply was his usual grin, accompanied by his voice echoing around in my head. "Why, love, you ask as if you don't know the answer already..."
I stifled a shriek, covering my mouth with both hands. My instincts had told me before, that he wouldn't like it if I screamed, and so far that instinct had proven right. I swallowed hard, trying to control myself before I spoke again.
"Why?" I swallowed again when my voice broke. My throat felt dry, and that made it harder to speak beyond the fear. "Why did yo turn me into a vampire? I thought you were going to take my life in exchange for saving my sister?"
"And I did, love!" He grinned at me, crossing his knees, and filding his hands over one knee. "However, I am much more than just any vampire, love. It is my profession that stands myself and others, above any of my more common bloodkin you will find roaming the streets!"
I blinked. "There are more?"
