Echo an AI built-in to the apartment. she's is not like your Alex’s or Siri's. She's much more advanced than that, she can experience emotions, in a way, and can even hold memories like a person.
”Yeah, yeah I'm getting up,” I said as I sit up in bed. Everyone has been talking about the spouse ceremony for the past month, so even if Echo didn't mention it there was no way of forgetting, especially with my family. I'm the oldest, the first one in my family to have a spouse ceremony to go to. My parents and sister have been very excited about today - can people steal your excitement, like if a bunch of people around is all excited about something, can that make you less excited about it. Maybe it's just me, maybe there something wrong with me. I don't know, I mean by the end of the day I’ll be with my future wife and we'll come back here with her family and have dinner with my family. I should feel amazing, but I don't.
This isn't new to me though, I've never really felt right about the spouse ceremony. Even when I was a little kid, in school we’d learn about the spouse ceremony, and why we’d get the soulmate crystal put in our hands as babies, and what happened to the outside world and why it is so uninhabitable now. Everyone left on Earth lives in our city, where the last people alive. The teachers say that our world was destroyed by our ancestors, and apparently, the world is bigger than we can ever imagine - which is kinda hard to believe it's that big and that our ancestors can destroy something so big. But according to the teachers, we polluted the air and the water, and over hundreds of years, we had many, many wars. I don't really understand why people would do something like that, the teachers say it's because people were greedy, they wanted money, land, and power. But I wonder, was it worth it, was money, land, and power worth destroying the world.
“Sir, our mother is calling, she is wondering what is taking so long, the ceremonial news is about to start.”
“Tell her I'll be out in a few minutes.” I grabbed the t-shirt my mother bought for today and slipped it on, I really don't look 16. I look at the standing mirror that's by my door, everyone says I look older for my age but I don't see it, honestly, I look more 12 then 16, or even 18 - that's what everyone says. I can never get my hair to look right, it's dirty-blond and short, I like it short but, the strands of my hair like going every which way and I can never keep them straight. And compared to other guys I know I'm pretty short, I mean I'm taller than most girls, but compared to guys I'm short. I have bright green eyes and pretty pale skin which doesn't really help when it comes to looking older as well.
