Teaching an old dog new tricks
Teaching an old dog now tricks
We've all heard the saying that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and that saying also applies to people. But I don't believe that, whether in dogs or in humans. I believe if you really want to learn something, you can do it.
Dogs want to please you, so yes, they will learn whatever you teach them. Humans, on the other hand, if truly motivated, can do the same.
Just look around you, and you will see this. People are doing things they've never done before in their 80s and 90s. It can be taking up a new career or a new hobby. Whatever it is, people are stepping out of their boxes at all ages.
I remember my mom, who dropped out of high school at fifteen, to support her family, but she went back to school at 45. She got her GED and went on to college and then changed careers at 50. I saw that anything was possible at any age.
You see people in their 80s doing triathlons because it's all in your mindset. If you can believe it, you can achieve it.
The biggest obstacle is yourself. That voice in your head that says you're too old, you're not smart enough, or you can't do this.
For myself, I want to learn new things every chance I get. I want to step out of my box to challenge myself because when you stop learning, you die. When you think you know it all, you stop growing. I know personally I've learned more lessons in the last 15 years than in my whole life.
Why? Because I was open to looking for the lessons, I wanted to change. I needed to change, and nothing was going to stop me. Not my age or my circumstances or my own self-doubt. I was going to overcome all of that to become better, and so yes, this old dog has learned many new tricks.
So today my friends remember it's up to you. As I say at the end of every blog, be the change you want to see, only you can do it. Anyone can change and grow if you believe that you can.
