THE UNITY OF ISLAM
Islam is a monotheistic religion and Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) was first asked to profess it among his close relatives and friends. When all the efforts were exhausted by the Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) in changing the faith of his fellow tribesmen and citizens of Mecca and there were no further chances of its success in his native city Mecca and vicinity around it, then he allowed his companions to migrate to other parts of the world, i.e. Habsha and Medina, so that Muslims could practice according to the teachings of Islam. He, himself was among the last to migrate to Medina. In Medina, we see how Prophet made the brotherhood bond between the Muhajireen and Ansaar. As the Muhajireen had left their properties in Mecca and were only able to save their skin from the pagan prosecutors, these Muhajireen were made pair with Ansaar to share bounties and necessities of life. This brotherhood bondage was so strong that examples of sacrifice by Ansaar were of such caliber, that it is difficult to find examples of such sacrifices in the annal of human history. The teachings imparted by Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) caused this bondage of unity. We find people of different races and areas wielded in to one community – Hazrat Bilal, a companion of the Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) who had been a slave and was Negro, was given equal rights and place, like that of a Qureshi Muslim. We see no difference of attitude among the Muslims towards each other due to color, race or place of birth. We see in the companions of Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) Negroes, Persian and Bani Israelites etc. The respect, which these companions had, was only due to their devotion to the message of God. In the time of Prophet (Peace Be upon Him), responsibility of any office was given to the companions on the abilities and devotion, and not by any other criteria. Due to this just attitude of Prophet, we can see that companions of the Prophet did not feel any hesitation to go for Jihad under the command of young Asama, son of a freed slave of Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him). This unity and discipline, which had been inculcated by the teachings of Islam in the community of Muslims, was the main soul working in the hearts of Muslims at the time of the Prophet (Peace Be upon Him), which made this community of Muslims able to get success over the armies of two great empires, i.e. Persia and Rome. Section – b
THE EMPHASIS OF ISLAM
The utmost emphasis of Islam was on the unity of God. This unity of God was the source unity among the believers. We see Quraish of Mecca left for this faith their own brethren and relatives and became brothers to the people of other area, city and tribe, who had the same faith. The last sermon of the Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) is the essence of the teachings of Islam. In this sermon, among other points concerning the welfare of the Muslim Community, this point was much emphasized that there is no difference, among the Muslims due to their color of skin, race, area or position of birth. All the differences which are there among the human beings due to the nature, i.e. color, race, area and position of birth, all vanishes, when they declare the faith on the unity of God and finality of Prophet-hood on Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him). On declaration of this faith that person enters in to the community of Muslims and God has declared all Muslims as brothers. The bond of this brotherhood was very strong, even stronger than the natural bonds among the human beings. We can see that for preservation of this new bondage, the Muslims at the time of the Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) fought wars with their own kith and kin, got killed by them and killed their own relatives in this process. The killing of the relatives was for the new bondage, which had been inculcated in them (Muslims) due to the new faith, i.e. faith on the unity of God and the end of the Prophet-hood on Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him). The strength of this brotherhood can be visualized from the following incident of battle of Yarmook when after the battle of whole day, the fighting armies had drawn back for rest and medical treatment, Muslims were searching their dead ones and injured in the battle field, that one of the injured asked for water, when he was offered water, at the same time, another injured moaned for water, the first one asked the bearer of the water to pass the water to the second one, without himself drinking the water. As the water was carried to the second injured, a third injured cried for water, the second injured asked the bearer of the water to pass the water to the third injured demanding water. Before the bearer of the water reached him, he expired and was no more in need of water. The bearer of the water went back to the second one, who also had expired by the time. On seeing this, the bearer of the water went back to the first one, but by that time, he too passed away of this world. This height of sacrifice, which has been narrated in this incident of early Muslims, was due to emphasis of Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) on brotherhood among the Muslims due to the faith on unity of God and the end of Prophet-hood on Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him). This faith had inculcated so much strength in the Muslim community that Muslims of that time preferred to sacrifice their own selves for their other Muslim brothers.
