Halloween!
Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on 31st October. The tradition of Halloween started with the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
In the eight century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as the time to honour all the saints, known as 'All Saints day'. The 'All Saints Day' also incorporated some traditions of Samhain, so 'All Hallows Eve' and later 'Halloween' was celebrated the evening before. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, doing festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
Origin of Halloween:
The Celts (related to the ancient Celtic festival) who lived 2,000 years ago, around the area of today's Ireland, United Kingdom and Northern France, celebrated their New year on 1st November. This day marked the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winters. This time of the year was associated with human death.
The Celts believed that on the night of 31st October, the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth. They believed that these ghosts caused trouble and damaged crops, so druids held bonfires and sacrificed animals and crops according to the Celtic deities, but the main reason to hold these bonfires were to protect them from the upcoming colder months.
Hey guys, I wrote this small passage on the origin of Halloween as Halloween is coming up, so Happy Halloween!!! and also, to make people realise that every year we celebrate a festival or an event (except this year due to covid :( ) We just lazily pass by that day, without even finding out the importance of the festival, so this year in the midst of quarantine we should all try learning about the history of different upcoming festivals! So I hope you guys learned something new!!
