The Crown of Miraelyn - Chapter 2
The royal carriage rode over an old abandoned road back to the castle. King Solan of Miraelyn and his family had just returned from a state visit to their neighboring country, Astrunae. It had been a long-winded visit, in witch many hands were shaken and a lot of politely nodding was involved. The relationship wit Astrunae was good. The country was an important ally of Miraelyn, en that's why king Solan found it important to regularly visit the heads of state. Friendships cost time and atention, or so he always said.
Queen Emma was anxiously looking out the windows, fearing non existent robbers and other people with bad intentions. Nervously, the queen turned her head to the other side of the vehicle and grabbed her purse a little tighter. Repressing a sight, Alyssa looked up from her book, an omnibus with knightly stories. Her mother was like this every time they crossed a terrain that she considered 'shady'. In the seventeen years that Alyssa had known her mother, she'd leaned it was best to ignore it when the queen was in a skittisch mood. That didn't mean that the princess was able to ignore it.
Another head turn from the queen. "Mom, can you please chill?" Alyssa snapped, not for the first time ever.
Now queen Emma turned her head to her daughter. "Alyssa," she squeaked, her voice an octave higher than usual. "You know very well that there are many filthy men out there. A royal carriage driving through dense forests is practically a magnet for thievery. I am protecting us."
"We have guards for that, mom" Alyssa mouthed back. "And we've never had a problem with thievery. Because our guards are doing their job."
The queen gave the girl a warning look.
"Listen young woman. I have seen lots of bad guys in my life. I'm looking out for us and you could show a little bit of gratitude for that. Or at least respect it." She turned her focus back to the window, ending the conversation.
"I would respect it if you looked out for us in silence" Alyssa muttered to her book, at which she received an elbow in her ribs from her brother.
Zachery was the crown prince and frankly an idiot, or so thought Alyssa at least. Not that she was jealous that he was the heir. Not at all. She preferred it this way. Reigning didn't sound appealing to her at all and she already hated the responsibility that came with being a royal child. She didn't need any more to worry about.
Her mother often called her foolish, irrational, childlike. And maybe she was. It was not like Alyssa cared what her mom thought of her. Okay, maybe a little, but she wasn't planning on changing her ways. She would be eighteen soon, and then her life would be hers. Or at least for how much that was possible for a girl with royal blood.
Queen Emma did not seem to appreciate Alyssa's cheeky remark and gave her daughter a disapproving look, while sniffing loudly. "I hope that one day, when I'm gone, a filthy robber will prove me right by giving you a good scare, Alyssa."
That one hurt Alyssa a bit. Embarrassed she returned her focused to her book, but the letters wouldn't form words and levitated like clouds in her mind. King Solan and Zachary gave each other an awkward look, both hating it when the two women fought. No one of the royal family uttered a word for the rest of the ride back to the castle.

Alyssa was studying her maps again. It was something she often did in her free time. She enjoyed knowing all the secret passages and hiding spots the castle and the village offered her. She liked going to the library and collecting different maps, comparing them, and finding flaws in the drawings. She then would make her own maps, by exploring the spots that were drawn incorrect and sketching what she really found. The result was a large collection of parchment charts that she kept inside a large bundle that she kept hidden underneath her bed.
Her parents wouldn't approve of Alyssa's hobby. Especially not queen Emma. Her mother would find it a very unladylike activity, and moreover very dangerous to go out in town without guards protecting her. It was her little secret that no one had to know about.
That was except for Irene, Alyssa's personal maid and more importantly, her best friend. Irene knew almost everything about the princess and, though not always one hundred percent willingly, would often join her on her adventures out in town. As opposed to her royal friend however, Irene was a responsible girl, and very loyal to her king. When she would go out with Alyssa, she would make sure that nothing would happen to the girl.
Irene was now braiding the princess' hair, who was bowed over a few different sketches of the royal kitchens, deeply focused. Suddenly, the girls heard someone knocking on Alyssa's bedroom door.
"Alyssa? Are you there?" The voice of queen Emma asked kindly. Immediately, Alyssa shot upright. Swiftly, she grabbed all the books and parchment that had been spread out on her desk while Irene got out a wooden chest in which Alyssa kept her work. Then, carefully, so that pages wouldn't rip, placed them in the chest, that she then pushed under her four-poster bed. She would sort out the paperwork later.
"Yes, mom, come in." Alyssa replied, a bit late, but it was better then her mom finding her maps.
Queen Emma let herself in, gave Irene a little nod, and then situated herself on the linen bed sheets. She looked into the eyes of her daughter, penetrating. The queen's eyes were blue, like her daughter's. Alyssa looked alot like her mother, from her blond, wavy hair to her little button nose and round chin. They had the same tall posture, though queen Emma always moved in a elegant matter, whereas Alyssa often bumbled, not sure what to do with her length.
"Alyssa, we need to have a chat," the queens voice was soothing and kind. "I want to apologize for what I said to you. That wasn't very kind of me."
Alyssa awkwardly shifted from feet to feet, not really certain how to react to her mom's sudden attempt at reconciliation.
"I'm sorry too, mom,' She muttered. 'for mocking you,"
Abruptly, the queen stood up. "Amazing, then that's settled," The queen stated, her voice formal again. And with that, she turned around, gave Irene a little nod and left the room. Alyssa couldn't suppress a little smile. Despite all of this haughtiness and overly protectiveness, she loved her mother more than anything.
