Living Sober
As they were leaving “Summerval’s Alcohol Recovery Center”, the royal and citizen elves were halted by shouts coming from behind them, and they turned to see what the commotion was about; neither of the two realized the one who was yelling was trying to get their attention, but they investigated the situation in case her services were needed.
When the shouting elf got closer, they heard him clearly say, “Before you leave, I’d like to speak to you both.”
“Who are you, and what makes you think we want to talk to you?” Hoosal asked.
“I apologize, my name is Thenry St. James, and I am the psychiatrist who was assigned Hezekiah’s caseload,” the male elf returned.
“Oh, I owe you an apology, myself, I didn’t realize who you were, doctor,” the citizen said.
“No apology necessary, instead, I’d like to speak with the both of you about some things regarding every day life once Hezekiah has finished drying out. There’s an empty meeting room right here, if you two would do me the pleasure of joining me there, we can get started”, the psychiatrist said. The guys allowed Helani to enter the room first, Hoosal was close on her heels, and the doctor followed them. When they’d gotten settled at a table, the psychiatrist was going through some papers he’d pulled from his attache case, and no one spoke for a few minutes.
“I’d like to thank you both for talking with me about your - - friend or brother? I’m confused which is he to y’all?” The doctor inquired.
“He’s actually a childhood friend of mine who I tell everyone is my brother, and he tells them that I’m his brother,” Hoosal clarified.
“And, Hoosal lives with me, so I look at Hezekiah as my little brother,” the royal elf responded.
“What’s your name, again? I’m sorry, it’s been a long day, and I’ve had to meet a lot of beings today,” Doctor St. James said.
“My name is Hellcat, I mean, Helani. Helani is my birth name, and Hellcat is a childhood nickname that I introduce myself with,” the royal elf said.
“Which do you prefer?” The doctor inquired.
“Hellcat, please”, she replied.
“Alright, Hellcat it is. The reason I wanted to speak with y’all before you leave is because I’m aware of the fact that you had to travel a long distance to get here, and I’d hate to have to call you to come back in order to give you guys some tools to work with that will help Hezekiah maintain his sobriety,” Doctor St. James said.

After they returned home, Helani wanted to have a discussion over the things they’d talked to the psychiatrist about, and she said, “I don’t know how you feel after the meeting earlier, but I am very excited to begin implementing the tools we were given”.
“I understand exactly what you’re saying, but where would you like to get started, the kitchen or our bedroom?” The citizen inquired.
“Since it’s closer, let’s put those tools to work in the kitchen, first. Then, we’ll go through the rest of the house, and we’ll eventually make our way to the bedroom,” the royal one said.
“Alright, that sounds good to me,” he returned.
“When the doctor started talking about the things we were doing to hinder Kiah’s sobriety, I really began to feel something awful. I mean, if I had known that leaving alcohol within his line of vision was going to be an issue for him, this stuff would have been gone the first time he tried to stay sober,” she said.
“What bothers me about everything is that, Hezeki knew about these things, but he never said anything to us,” he said.
“Of course, he wouldn’t say anything to us. Why would he? I mean, we had alcohol all over the place, which made it easier for him to have access whenever he slipped, again,” Helani said.
“Do you think having alcohol around was the reason he slipped this time?” Hoosal inquired.
“Not necessarily, he could’ve started somewhere else, however, I do not want to be a part of his problem, but part of the solution. Besides, for two elves like us, we’ve got way too much alcohol. Stop and think about it, when was the last time you and I had a drink?” She asked.
