The Blame Game
Writing Prompt 118

Grandma always said, “It is wise to admit when you are wrong.” Teaching the idea of admitting and seeing the mistake. Then resolutions can be found to go forward for better. Growing by learning from mistakes.

In schools, kids are notorious for passing blame. No one wants to serve the consequences when teachers get angry. Then it becomes a game with some. The game of seeing what all they can get away with. The thrill they feel when they think they have won.

Adult years can be the same. Many do the same things on jobs. No one wants to face an angry boss, much less serve the consequences.

One day, there was a young girl who had been abused and traumatized. Finding comfort in a stuffed animal, she carried it everywhere she went. Having a surgery was no exception.

After surgery, she was asleep in the room, snuggling the toy. An employee walked in the room and yanked it out of her arms, startling her. She got traumatized at the act.

The guardian took the issue straight to the CEO of the hospital. The CEO was angry. Determined someone had to pay the consequences.

With no one admitting fault or taking blame, the supervisor was under pressure to hold someone accountable. The guilty party had worn a floral top that day. Floral tops are plentiful in life.

Being forced to sign a written warning, I was angry. All because I had worn a floral top? Not even fitting the rest of the description? Not even working in the same area the day of the offense?

Did Grandma forget to tell the rest of the lesson? How to handle being blamed for others’ mistakes? Was I suppose to be Jesus Christ and carry the sins of the world? Why was I supposed to be punished for sins I didn’t commit?

It has been said, “without documentation, there is no evidence.”. I was so angry, I spent two days writing and throwing it at the wall. Then, rewriting again to get the facts correct. There’s value in rewriting and revision.

Going back to work, I passed it on to a higher supervisor. When the supervisor was moved to another department, I knew things were righted. I didn’t have to carry the sins of the world.
