An Empowered Woman.
Many may define women empowerment as a vital concept that enhances the rights and freedoms of a female, and I totally agree. But I for one know that woman empowerment is a broad spectrum that curtails many things that affect a woman which in this case include reproductive justice.
This is a very controversial topic in many areas of the world including my country Uganda. Till today, I'm still failing to come up with a concrete definition of this term but however I would say that ;
Reproductive justice is a framework that seeks to address the inequalities and structural barriers that impact an individual's ability to make decisions about their own bodies, health, and families.
Reproductive justice emphasizes on
1. The right to have children through access to affordable maternity and child Healthcare services.
2. The right not to have children through access to safe and legal abortion and contraception services.
A woman can't be regarded as empowered if she doesn't own the right of choosing whether she wants a child or not. Many people would go ahead and argue that pregnancy is a result of having consented to unsafe sex but however this argument cuts out victims of sexual assault.
It is from this background that I urge all civic leaders and feminists to pick an interest in reproductive justice because this a lacuna that must be addressed in to promote women empowerment.
