The Past We Left Behind - Chapter 5
Abigail's cell phone slipped from her trembling hand, crashing to the floor with a clanging sound that woke Ethan. He hastily pushed back the covers, his sleepy expression turning to one of concern as he turned to face Abigail. The phone lay discarded on the ground, and from it came the soft sound of a woman's voice saying, "Hello? Hello?"
Ethan recognized the voice immediately, and a sense of dread tightened his muscles. Without looking back, Abigail hurried towards the living room, her footsteps echoing hurriedly.
"Abigail?" Ethan murmured softly, his voice filled with sadness, watching her leave. Determined, he jumped off the bed, quickly pulled on his shirt and picked up his cell phone from the floor, then rushed after Abigail.
In the living room, Abigail stood in front of the balcony door and looked through it, just like the day before, but now the atmosphere was different. This time, Ethan was the cause of her grief, not some reckless guy. Sensing his presence, Abigail, still with her back turned, fired her question with a hint of a raised tone, "Why didn't you tell me you had a girlfriend?"
"It's not what you think." Ethan answered, his voice strained and full of emotion.
"And what is it?" Abigail turned quickly, demanding an answer.
Taking a deep breath to push back the tears that were streaming down his face, Ethan paused, gathering himself before speaking quietly, “The moment I found her… with my best friend, I knew I had nothing left with her. " He struggled to control his shaky voice, his face on the verge of tears. The anger on Abigail's face disappeared, replaced by a glimmer of understanding and compassion.
"I…" Abigail began, her gaze falling to the floor. Her words trailed off as Ethan interjected, "That's when I told her I didn't want to see her again. I don't know what she told you, but she clearly didn't understand me very well."
A veil of sadness covered Abigail's face as she looked into his eyes. "I… I'm sorry that happened to you." She said softly, her voice filled with empathy. Ethan gave her a small smile, then took a deep breath and said sincerely, “I left Longonis because of her, because of her betrayal. I couldn't be there anymore."
Abigail came closer to him and gently took his hand. "I can't imagine how hard that must have been for you." She whispered to him, her voice filled with genuine compassion. "It takes tremendous strength to leave everything behind and I admire you for having the courage to do it."
Ethan's eyes glistened with unshed tears as he looked into Abigail's eyes, feeling the warmth of her touch. "It wasn't easy, but in that moment I knew I had to choose me. I couldn't continue with a relationship built on lies and betrayal." He admitted in a calm voice, laced with vulnerability.
Abigail nodded as she gently stroked Ethan's hand with her fingers. "I agree. We all deserve to be with someone who values and respects us, someone who brings out the best in us."
Ethan's eyes met Abigail's, his voice filled with sincerity. "And that's you, Abigail. Even though you got on my nerves at first, you slowly started to get under my skin more and more. The way you make me feel, the way you understand me without judgment... It's something that I've been craving for a long time."
Abigail's breath hitched and her heart fluttered with a mixture of worry and excitement. Remembering the bus and the song Ethan was listening to, Abigail turned to the balcony door and quietly asked, "Ethan... Are you sure this is going to work out? That you don't have feelings for Rebecca anymore? Last night…"
