The Woman in Black (2012) - Movie Review
Start with the positives. This movie is luminiosuly effective when it comes to atmospheric direction. The gothic look of the film fits the story and it's horror elements exceedingly well but my problem with the movie is that the most important thing with a story is the character and this character despite feeling sad, I had no empathy for him because the film seemed to hold no interest in the actual character itself and more on cheap jump scares. I wish this movie does what Mike Flanagan does with horror and have the actual horror come from the characters, not a cheap jump scare that is not do with the story and actually do something that's fresh and different and creative or unique from other horror films and I will always be sad that this overshadows the 1989 adaptation that genuinley cares about the character and is more terrifying because we are able to hope for Arthur when terrifying things happen to him therefore we are more horrified when we do and the horror doesn't come from jump scares in that version. This adaptation, though spends time with the character, is lazy to proceed with an empathetic attachment to Arthur and actually show him as a human being instead of just a quiet, depressed human being who looks motionless. However I still think The Woman in Black is a very atmospherically effective haunted house movie and the set and location is magnificently excellent. It captures the feel of the house and the hauntings and of the historical time period very well so I would still recommend this adaptation and I'm going to give it a B+. If you care more for characters and story and horror actually coming from the characters themselves with an interestingly intriguing and luminiously unique approach I would recommend the 1989 version. Again I still recommend this adaptation if your for despite the lack of characterisation, an extremely effective haunted house story filled with amazing atmosphere.
