That Hidden World Part 3
Staring into those three faces, a memory flashed by me, to quick for me to grab it. I screamed at the whole unrealness of this situation and started to run. Stumbling back from the porch and down onto the lawn, I took a fleeting moment to look behind me. Those three people had gotten over their shock and were now chasing me with grim determination. I had no time to study them, only facing forward and running.
I ran too fast, unable to stop from my fear or take a breath. I was not tired, though, and felt adrenaline as I navigated the streets. My feet pounded on the cracked pavement and I strained my ears to try to hear if they were still chasing me.
"She went here!" a quick gasp of sound made me sprint faster and I headed toward the gray silo standing at the edge of the city limits. Vines reached up, their green leaves intertwining across the surface.
My heart was racing over my heavy breathing and I ran the few feet to the building, leaning on it to catch my breath. My plan was to head inside and escape by hiding.
Before I could sneak inside, a cold voice behind me made me halt.
"Stop. Move, you die," I turned slowly, not heeding the warning, to face a boy my age with cold silver hair and startling blue eyes.I studied his tense pose. He glared at me, a gun pointing toward me, his fingers inching towards the trigger.
My gaze moved to the three people jogging toward us. They each had relieved smiles upon me being caught and nodded toward the boy.
The first, a pretty raven haird girl with dark green eyes and a serious look, crossed her arms.
"Who are you?" she asked me, a hint of kindness in her otherwise cold tone.
I looked at the other two boys beside her. One was golden haired with stormy gray eyes and the other had dyed his hair a shade of bright green.
I said nothing, only tightening my grip on the backpack.
The silver haired boy sighed. "We can make this easy, or we can make this hard. Your choice,"
I didn't want to die."I don't know," I croaked out, my knees trembling.
The girl raised her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"
I cleared my throat."I don't know my name," I explained more clearly."Happy?"
"Well, you certainly knew your way around here," the golden haired boy said quietly. He pointed toward the silo. "Where does this lead?"
"It's a secret exit used only for emergencies and leads toward the exit of the city to the cliffs," I said automatically and then clapped my hands over my mouth.
The green haired boy gave a loud giggle. "Someone giving away our secrets," he sang out loud and the girl hit his stomach with her elbow, shutting him up. The silver haired boy narrowed his eyes on me. "How do you know this?",he said roughly, stepping forward.
I swallowed. "I don't know, okay?"
The golden haired boy studied me. "I'm Seth. This is Silver," he gestured toward the boy holding the gun at me. "Evan," he pointed toward the green haired boy who waved at me with a grin. "And Rose," he finished with the girl only scowling at me.
"Okay. So?" I couldn't help but say.
Silver bared his teeth at me. "You're either one of us or you're not. And you know what happens when you're not?" he said menacingly.
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Clearly not since you need to explain it to me," I mocked him.
He scowled at me with greater force, clutching the gun harder.
"How did you get here?" Evan asked me curiously.
They were stalling. Someone else was coming.
Well then, I'll play. It's not like I had a choice.
"I was in a car crash," I started.
"Wait what?" Rose asked me. " A car?"
I nodded. "Why? What's wrong?"
Rose glanced at me nervously as if I was mentally ill.
"No cars exist here. We're alone,"
Well then. Maybe I was mentally ill.
"Silver!" a short bark from a nearby man sounded and I turned to see a white clad man with gray hair and hazel eyes hurrying toward us.
"We heard your message. What happened?" he asked.
He stopped suddenly when he saw me, his body still as he took me in.
"Who is she?" he asked dangerously, his body tense.
Rose's eyes darted around to the boys who stayed silent. "We found her when we went out and chased her here. But she knows this place, Master Jamal!" she added, no doubt trying to save me.
It seemed as if the girl was the most kindhearted out of this group.
"How?" Master Jamal focused on me.
I shrugged. "I don't know. It's just a faint memory," I said helpfully.
He closed his eyes. "We have had several lost children over the years in this community," he said randomly. "Five in total. Three were declared dead when we found their bodies. The other two were twins.
A girl and a boy," he opened his eyes, a swirling color of light and tilted his head as if declaring a prophecy.
It would have been funny if the sky hadn't started to rumble then.
"The girl's name was April. The brother's name was August,"
I blinked back a barrage of twisting thoughts and memories when I heard my name.
Me as a child, playing with a boy similar looking like me.
Me, training with a fencing sword against little Rose.
Me, laughing with Silver.
Me, playing in the greenhouse.
I brought my hands to my eyes, a throbbing headache bringing dark spots to my eyes. Rose gasped as she connected the dots and I heard a small, hidden sob from Silver.
A glance toward him showed me his arms at his side, the gun limp as he stared at me with tears.
"How?" I whispered, my knees buckling. It was too much to process.
Master Jamal understood. "We lost you and August to a kidnapper. Our kids are precious, different from others. You were only 12 when they kidnapped you. Twins were even rarer here," he explained heavily. "They were always in demand by people unlike us,"
"April?" Seth asked cautiously.
I looked at them, still in shock. I was April. I had a twin brother.
"Maybe we should bring her back to base?" I heard Seth ask in a nervous tone.
I felt Rose's hands supporting me. "You okay?"
"I'm not April," I said faintly. "This can't be real,"
"I think she's in shock," Evan said, somber for once.
I giggled high pitched. "This is not real. I'm daydreaming,"
After a thought I asked,"Who kidnapped us?"
Master Jamal shook his head. "You don't need to know,"
I snarled at him and twisted away from Rose. "I do. I need to know,"
He looked at me sadly."It was one of our most trusted councilmen,"
A salty taste filled my mouth. "Who?" I whispered.
It was Seth who said it, guiltiness filling his tone.
"My father. Jack Morgan,"
