Harry Potter: A Critical Analysis by Maryam Abdul Wahid
It is an eight chapter series of novel by J.K Rowling revolving around the protagonist Harry Potter and his escapades. Harry attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry accompanied by his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. He learns to perform magic in the school along with his fellows. As every story is incomplete without an antagonist, the role is occupied by Lord Voldemort. This review is written on the film adaptation of novel.

When the movie comprises of some satisfactory qualities, it lacks in several traits, simultaneously. Beginning with the adaptation, the film presents extraordinary visualization. The graphics are incredibly fine. The scenes are edited brilliantly when it comes to the art work. Taking the example of Hogwarts. The school is shown standing with all the glory and grandeur. But what is suspicious is that the structure of the school kept changing with the progress of series. The point comes in notice because the school is introduced to be old hundreds of years. Then how can the erection change?

The series begins with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall drop baby Harry to his aunt’s house. Petunia Evans Dursley, Lily Potter’s sister, the one who never liked her sister because of her witchcraft. But might be the need of time, or helplessness as Harry has no other relative living. The adventures of Harry start from his entry in Hogwarts. His selection in quidditch, the secret behind the attempts to kill Harry, even during the game, his win as a Seeker catching the Golden Snitch. Later on, the whole mystery reveals when Harry and Professor Quirrill come face to face.

The objectionable point in this meeting is the concealment of Lord Voldemort under Quirrill’s turban. Although, the turban is styled in a way so that no one can sense the existence of Voldemort, but in some measures it is perplexing and questionable. But, the film excellently played with the enigma and the pursuit of the person trying to murder Harry. The movie ends with the disclosure of all the secrets being discussed and finding of the Philosopher’s stone. Professor Dumbledore announces the demolition of the stone as the conclusion. What initiated never to be ended was a beguiling friendship.

The second part is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This slice of the cake also starts with the misbehavior of Dursley family with Harry. Dobby; the house elf, tries to stop Harry from going back to Hogwarts with intention to help him, ends up putting him in troubles. He helps Harry subsequently, although he is bound to serve a certain family, later disclosed to be the Melfoys. This time Ron Weasley along with his brothers, appears to rescue Harry. And they fly to the Weasley’s (a weird family) house.

Later, Gilderoy Lokhart, unreasonably, the attraction of all the ladies, is introduced. A snob, presents a clownish character, most likely to be used as source of comedy. He is nothing for good, an annoying personality. Moreover, Lokhart causes nuisance during the movie.

Another mischievous fact is that, no one detects when the wizards get through the wall to reach station no 9¾. But as soon as Harry and Ron get bumped into the wall, they get notices. Strange. Then Ron, a boy just of 12, drives, rather flies the car. Quite uncertain. Getting through all the troubles, they reach Hogwarts, somehow. Overall, a bit comic relief is given in the beginning leading to a stressful feat.

The Chamber of Secrets demonstrates Tom Riddle’s desire to meet Harry. Riddle, divulged as Lord Voldemort in the part, wanted to know why the baby with no extraordinary talent escaped with nothing but a scar, when Lord Voldemort’s powers were destroyed. Secondly, Riddle aspired to fulfill the dream of Salazar Slytherin, to restrict the magic to pureblooded people. Thirdly, it was a quest of Lord Voldemort to return alive. For this process, he wanted to kill Ginny Weasly, as she was the possessor of the book by that time. As he killed Moaning Myrtle fifty years ago, to come back years later. Moreover, this chapter was facetious to an extend, revealing some crucial information under wraps.

The third chapter is Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. Tired of the tortures of Dursley’s, Harry leaves the house not going without using magic upon Vernon Dursley’s sister. And there he break one of the rules of Hogwarts that no student under seventeen can use magic out the school. He visits the magic world minister and is sent back to Hogwarts. He is informed by Mr. Weasly and later by Hermione that Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban to kill Harry.

Sirius and Remus Lupin; a professor in Hogwarts, turned out be very close friends of the Potter family. Sirius was considered to be the follower of Voldemort, who cheated on Potters and became the reason behind their murder. But, reality can never be befogged for a long time. Sirius was discovered to be innocent by Harry. Arcanum evinced on Harry, Sirius is the only living family of Harry as he is Harry’s godfather. Luna, who appeared to be guiding Harry at his worse, was not given much importance, which she had right of. Moreover, this part also worked as a brick in building the base like the previous parts.

The series continues with fourth part Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire; the most extravagant part. The introduction and enigma of Alastar Moody, and inception of his role to last till the end. This movie, has needless inclusion of multiple characters, only to exaggerate the plot. Lucius Malfoy is being unveiled as the disguised associate and aficionado of Lord Voldmort. Confab curtailed, there is nothing important than the resurrection of the one not to be named; Lord Voldemort.

The story advances with the preparing for war in Harry Potter and The Order of Phoenix. The Ministry of magic and wizardry consider Harry’s claim of Voldemort’s revival, a scheme by Professor Dumbledore. The motive behind is stated as Dumbledore’s desire to replace the minister. The Minister is afraid of losing his place, rather than accepting the peril on the magical world and taking initiatives for that. Quite against the responsibilities of the posture he possesses. Therefore Dolores Umbridge replaces Professor Dumbledore as the Headmaster of Hogwarts.

With the development, some odd events took place. Umbridge implies nonsensical rules as a headmistress. Magic gets banned in the school of magic and wizardry. Ron and Hermione convince Harry to train the students for the imminent jeopardy. All the secretly training session is quite enthusiastic. It makes the hearts to beat faster than usual, as the mind decodes all the indications. After being caught by Umbridge, Hermione and Harry trap her to the forest and hand her over to the centaurs, who have personal grudges. Not willingly off course. Somehow, the students get rid of a cruel and bizarre character, in the form of the head of a school.

This part clearly shows that when it comes to politics, the self-obsessed leaders, for the lust of power, can put the demos into risk. People trust them for their safety, their good, but all they care for is their selves. From this part onwards, the series starts getting boring. Unnecessary exaggerations are involved in and the important events are not being discussed clearly as much as they needed to be. Moreover, the excitement must rise with the time, it ought not to be decreased.

The sixth part, Harry Potter and The Half Blooded Prince. The part is named after the book of Severus Snape, which helped Harry a lot in order to get closed to Professor Horace Slughorn. He was the one who taught Tom Riddle and told him about the things Riddle later used for black magic and horcruxes. He was the only one who knew about the horcruxes by the time. This part is important for the revelation of the secrets and past. The movie opens up with the past of Tom Riddle and Severus Snale. This movie as a whole is foreshadowing in all possible ways. Moreover, this part is a mystery revealer.

The seventh part was never needed. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, two chapters could be depicted as one. It gives an impression that it was just for exaggeration. Roaming around places to places for what purpose was that? When they decided to teleport after Ron's arm gets fine, then why even after he recovered they did not used teleportation to reach Black's secret house? Fine that they needed to get clues about the gifts of death as per the plot, but this could be done in fast forward. Making a movie of almost 3 hours for this, is baseless.

The eighth part did not do justice with the death sequence of Dumbledore. A great magician, because of whose presence, no evil power could enter the school, died so easily, with one incantation. And for addition, when Dumbledore’s magic stick was one of the gifts of the death, then why it was kept as a present for Lord Voldemort. It was quite obvious that he would find it easily. But why he was given the access of it? To come and just take. Why no protection or security measures were taken?

Ron's brother dies in the last few minutes of the series. The purpose and effect of his death is not comprehensible. If after a few minutes of his death, everyone would forget him like nothing, even Ron who was crying moments before, came out being happy with Hermione, then what was the need?

Furthermore, a very important point is the death sequence of the antagonist, an evil magician who has caused destruction in the magical world in race of being Supreme. It must have been grand, it must have been rememberable. But no all leads to disappointment. All the expectations with the termination of Lord Voldemort, are decimated. When he dies, there must have been celebrations, or a few cheers of joy but no. It was like ok. So what if he has died. Come out of your sleep and see you have got rid of an affliction for life and you are not reacting as you should have? More than strange. One thing appreciable that happened in this part is Harry’s decision of breaking the most powerful magical stick in the world. The series ends with a heart touching act of Harry, who kept his son’s name after the two most important figures in his life.

After a deep and lengthy analysis of every part, when there are some observations in the hand, a few questions arrive sidewise. Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall left harry to his aunt’s house in the beginning which clears the thing that they both equally took the responsibility of Harry but later on in coming parts we see McGonagall in no discussion. She is completely abandoned. Either the discussion took place between Dumbledore and Harry or Dumbledore and Professor Snape. Professor McGonagall was only seen guarding and guiding Harry on her own as her own son or as a well-wisher. Either it is by gifting him the broom or helping him with his rising curiosity. Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall were shown like parent figures for Harry.

Although, the graphic was exceptional, scenery was amazing. But what kept changing was the structure of Hogwarts. If the school was constructed decades before, than how come the exterior and interior kept varying in every sequel. The grandeur of the school we see in the philosopher's stone, cannot be witnessed in any other. Rather the school was shown decaying. It might be because of the evil powers prevailing but that doesn't even matter. Because it could not change the whole structure of the school as the school was declared to be hundreds of years old.

The next point in the queue is that in every part we see the train to Hogwarts departs from the same platform but in last few parts, the platform at Hogwarts arrival point changes its location. How is this even possible for the track to change the places? It is completely unperceivable.

But where is McGonagall in the whole series? Was she playing a guest appearance? No certainly she was not. Then why the start of the story included her. Her character was abandoned through the whole series. She could do much more.

Then the movie never needed to show the kissing scenes of the teenagers, who have lived hardly thirteen years of age. But they did it to lead to the climax. The building of the subplot of coupling could have been shown any other way than this. The reason behind this point is very clear that the audience was majorly children. And as per psyche children adopt what they watch, unconsciously. So, what were they teaching to the kids?

I've never been in the favor of leaps. And Harry Potter has a 19 years leap in the end just to end with a new beginning, a new Generation. But there was no need of that. It could have ended on Voldemort's death and people making marry on the extinction of a depraved force. Leap flubs the continuity of anything. And if there was compulsion of the leap, then the concluding scene must have been a little enlarged. Rather than a fast ending with a scene of a minute or so.

Everything started with a prophecy, which was hinted about in 7th chapter for only two to three minutes hardly by Snape and Dumbledore. A movie consisting of eight series has a major reason of being a prophecy for killing Harry's parents, but never clearly depicted such significant affair. Rather, till the end you wonder why did Voldemort kill Lilly and James Potter? There were two names for the families who would be having a son to demolish the evil powers and kill Voldemort. But why did he chose Harry's family? There are many questions that arrive watching the movies. And one from the bundle of questions is the most essential one. Why does Harry’s scar symbolizes as N? What is the reason behind the sign?

Dumbledore knew everything about prophecy, harry, his future. He used to give him hints at times about situations but never told him in open and clear words. Everything, that he had a right upon to know. But he was kept ignorant.

Why so much miseries with a single child? Parents died, never knew he had a godfather, when he got to know, could not spend time with him, and then unfortunately he dies. Then professor (Black's friend) dies in the end protecting the school, and the death scene was not even shown.

The worst that happened, after or along with harry, was Snape. He lost his childhood love, then watched her dying in front of his eyes even after knowing that voldemort is going to kill them. The regret of not being able to save his love. In love for her, he protected her son. For him he joined the army of Voldemort, killed Dumbledore and finally was killed brutally.

Again an eight series movie, running between protagonist and antagonist for killing of Voldemort who prevailed too much destruction, it must have been grand. But all we are given is an abrupt death scene. Where he just dies. Totally against expectations. Although Neville Longbottom wanted to take revenge of his parent's death. It could be any other way. Why he was given the opportunity to kill the snake? The last horcrux out of eight. It must have been killed by Harry and in front of Voldemort. Everyone should have witnessed the demise of Voldemort. That power has no authority over death. No matter how much you contend, how many plans you may make, you have to die in the end. Death is the ultimate reality. On great places you may sit, powers you may get, everything is impuissant before mortality. You can try splitting life into parts, making horcurxes, every part will be demolished at its fixed time, by themselves or through anyone else. By any means, any appliance or one waft and life ends. An eternal sleep takes over.
