BLoG: My Views on the World
How has my view on the world changed since I was a child?
What a thought provoking question. And being I was born and raised a Marine's Son I could really say it hasn't changed all that much. As children we were shown the reality of the world in which we lived, at a very young age. As a resident of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba we were shown the deep dark side of war, barbwire fences, men facing each other with very big guns, one country at war with the other. Communism vs Freedom was where the lines were drawn and literally just yards apart 2 men stood from opposing countries facing each other with nothing between these soldiers but a fence, air and opportunity.
As a Marine Officers son I was given the eye opening tour at a very young age of the infamous fence that separated the 2 countries. It was a stark symbol of what it meant to be at war, of what it meant to live on foreign soil. And what it meant to be an American. As children we were made aware of the dangers and politics that surrounded us, living on such a small but necessary amphibious and strategic base. Growing up in the military was an eye-opening, jaw dropping experience. We learned about the good, the bad and the ugly. We drove multi-million dollar tanks through the woods. We learned about the politics of life in the military. As well, our childhood was enriched with our rich PuertoRican culture. We were raised to turn the other cheek. We were raised to always be respectful and humble. We had to learn what it was to trust another person and be trustworthy. All you had was the family around you. So protect and cherish it at all cost.
We learned that life is a gift, so embrace and appreciate it. We were raised to speak the truth. And always watch what you say! We learned what it meant to LooVe God and Country! I will always honor my flag, never allow anyone to desecrate it! We were raised as Christians and to do unto others. We upheld the Golden rule. We appreciated patriotism and what it meant. We are proud of our flag and what it stands for. In God we trust, was a staple in our upbringing, not just words on printed paper. Simply put we were a traditional/conservative family in many ways. So how has my adult view changed from my childhood view?
Well not too much. I still have the core values I was taught, raised with. I still celebrate our rich PuertoRican culture in many ways, especially holidays. I still believe in GOD 1st, doing what's right and respecting thy fellow man. I still uphold the golden rule to do unto others. As an adult I still follow many of my childhood beliefs and rules as an American, PuertoRican, christian/catholic man. As a grown adult I support our troops, LooVe my God and would give my life for my family and to protect the freedoms of my country from all enemies both foreign and domestic.
Everything my parents instilled in me I still honor and follow to this day. My views of the world have not changed. I still see it as a dangerous world out there. The world is definitely a beautiful place, but always know your surroundings and be aware of those around you. This world can swallow you up whole, if you allow it to. Never take things for granted! Always be ready for the unexpected.
In closing, these are the things that have lasted the test of time. These are my views that have grown with me and that I have integrated into my belief system. These are the ABCs of me.
