When Writers Are Appreciated
When Writers Are Appreciated
It was Monday. Month of March. I was working as an Head Examiner, in my school. I had a team of sixteen teachers, a shortage of three. We had completed seven days of evaluation and things were going smooth. I must admit, I had a good team and we enjoyed as we worked.
Thursday night a weird idea hit me. Why not giving a copy to each of the teachers of my first novel which I still had many? So it was a treat given to all- a rasgulla and a signed copy of my first novel.
Saturday morning. The teachers praised me for the book. I was overwhelmed. They said they would give me a proper feedback after they had read the entire story.
Monday morning. A teacher who turned up early morning, at eight, lavished all the praises for my ingenuity and skill. She said she would call me to their school to speak to their students. An honour, of course, and I was on cloud nine already.
At the same time when I was talking to this teacher, I realised I had to get xerox of one set of question paper and marking scheme. The school office was closed and the evaluation should start by 8:15 am. The teachers had turned up and were asking for the question paper and marking scheme. Since, I couldn't go, I had to send an attender.
I called the attended and gave him the papers and handed him a thousand rupee note since I had no change. I asked him to get five copies each.
Half an later he cane with three heavy bundles and showed me the bill. Eight hundred twenty. I was shocked. Since he could communicate only in Tamil and I didn't know a word of Tamil, I with anguish parted him with the money.
Sitting at my desk, I was cribbing for the money I had to shell out. I opened the bundles and saw there were 5 copies each of the five sets of question papers and marking scheme. I was flabbergasted.
Now, the sight of those 25 papers, since only five were used by the teachers, agitated me. I wanted to throw those of because it was a sight of unbearable pain.
Now the question is where or how to use them? Should I give it as scrap or to the peanut seller or use to wrap the soiled napkins?
