Chapter 2
Hailey walked down the stairs feeling triumphant and defeated all at once.What was she thinking... her mother would surely skin her alive.
Everything changed when Wilfred had a stroke, Mildred's attitude changed, Brenda slept with every male on two legs that came in a two mile radius, and Hailey... well Hailey was now the care taker of both the house and her father's land. She had to oversee all the affairs of the house while her mother and sister did absolutely nothing.
Hailey sighed in despair as that was the only thing she could do given the situation.
She grabbed a thatch container and hurriedly made her way to William one of the stable lads, she needed to get some items in town. Meadow pond always got crowded at noon and Hailey really needed to beat the evening rush or she'd run into him again. She sat in the coach and sorted her petticoats.
She looked longingly at the endless green that stretched across the never ending white fencing. 'Papa has a lot of land' she thought to herself. This was very true for her father was very wealthy and this Mildred was very much aware of.
As she neared the town the chatter of the town folks grew louder. She intended to hurry in and out not making conversation with any nosy town member asking the same rhetorical questions daily "how is your father" and she would reply the same each day "the same way he was yesterday and the day before that" they'd often state that she was very ill mannered but really she didn't care.
As the carriage halted she made her way out gently crunching the gravel below. She stepped forward only to bump into a familiar frame. It was Nathaniel and the look he held in his Moss green eyes told Hailey that this was absolutely no coincidence.
