Trauma
Time to fill the silo in November ‘89.
The corn was being harvested,
the day was going fine.
My dad was by the blower
that sent silage flying high
inside the silo chute
to 60 feet up in the sky.
My brothers and my sisters
and my mom helped on the farm,
And everyone watched younger ones
to keep them out of harm.
But accidents still happen,
and they happen way too fast!
The four year old was by the trench
when daddy saw him last.
Next thing he knew, he saw his son
fall in the blower bin.
He stopped the tractor and his terror
fueled adrenaline,
afraid his son, already bits,
blown to the silo top,
to open up the blower shield,
my daddy did not stop
but ran right off, straight to the house
to dial the phone for help.
My oldest brother, close beside,
heard little brother’s yelp.
He opened up the blower
and he saw him there inside,
Jammed up against the blower fan
and looking terrified.
