Childhood extraordinary
My childhood was extremely extraordinary. One of a kind. We didn't really have toys to play with. Consider it lucky if we ever did have a ball or balloon, especially Christmas. We come up with random games just so we could at least play and have fun. We would all gather together my cousins and our nextdoor neighbors kids and play hopscotch written on the dirt as big as a the size of a car. We then took turns and see who will win and consider that person the king or queen.
My kids have all sorts of toys and I told them of how lucky and blessed they are. Yes it's all new with new generation and a new season. But I was also very blessed to have experience my childhood. We were crowded for life. Every evening we all have to be ready by six for our family prayer, then dinner. Homework was a must finish before dinner. Not every family have a television we were one of a few that had those modern television where everyone will come over if theres a movie scene on a specific night.
The remote control was usually one of us kids, you sit down and get up to change channels. We weren't aloud to watch Television on school days, our bedtime had to be 830pm. We never have alarm clock we had the most amazing one. As early as 5 to 6am you will hear the loudest cry of a rooster that's when we wake up and have our morning prayers before getting ready to school. My mom will make a homemade breakfast, we call it coco rice, it's like soupy rice with coco and coconut in it and sugar. You have to finish your breakfast because you will only get $2 dollars for your bus fare and a little snack for lunch.
After school, theres no mucking around, we have to go home as soon as possible and help out with what's need to be done at home. By 4 PM we should all be done with small chores like picking up the rubbish, sweep the house... Then that's when we can start playing. We would get newspaper or any kind of paper and ripped it to small money, we then come up with whatever we can find to build a store and the items. Each kid will build his own store and each will see at the end of the game who has the nicest store and which store people will buy the most.
If not that we would collect all sorts of ropes and tie it together to form a bigger circle then we have a pattern that your legs to do in order to win. We call it tiptoe. Each takes turn until win, Us girls usually play that while boys will play marble throws. There should be a small hole dig on the dirt. The stand from a distance and throw your marble towards the hole. Whoever gets it in win. And the winner gets to take all the players marbles until theres nothing. All were outdoors. It was fun. I always look forward to it.
On Christmas we would get a bag of 6 balloons each that will last us Christmas and new year. We were happy though we never complain. We were to serve our eldest and respect them. It was quite rare. It was history. We get to spend time as a family and learn about the values of life and our culture. We were taught of how hard life can be and just to be thankful for what is given to us. We might not have the kind of toys that my kids have right now but we were able to enjoy whatever we come up with. We were all smiling and enjoy it. New technology has upgraded not only flat screen TV with actual remotes, an alarm clock that tells you exactly what time it was.
Cellular phone was rare if seen back then. You will see it either a business person or someone from overseas. We use public transport, some will walk to school. Some nights we will only have pawpaw and coconut or any fruits that are planted in our yard. Besides not having what we have nowadays I have grateful for my childhood experience. There was a roof over my head and always food. I hope one day my kids can experience a taste of my childhood and be grateful.
