I can never forget the joyous days of my childhood, especially the summer when all we did was swim in the river or lie on it's edge basking in the endless sunlight reflected off the slow churning waters of the Mississippi River. The river met the Gulf of Mexico a few miles from our sandbar, so the water was brackish and our bodies were always coated with layers of sand and salt. Emily and I were on the cusp of puberty. A time when our limbs seemed to long and gangly for our bodies and we looked like we were starving to death in spite of full bellies. Little did we know those last few days of squandered delight would be the end of our childhood...
