Mans Best Friend
#WritcoStoryPrompt9
The cry was faint but I heard loud and clear it as I walked past the dark bushes. My steps faltered. It was late and I wasn’t sure if it was a smart thing to stop and inspect the source.
I stood there thinking in two minds ,to go and take a look or move on. The cry was of something in distress so I did not have the heart to leave it to its fate. I switched on my flashlight and moved towards the bushes. I heard a soft whimper and as I focused my light ,I noticed a little puppy lying there injured. As I moved closer to it to inspect its wounds I saw it was frightened. I touched him softly and assured I meant no harm. Once he grew accustomed to my touch and was quiet ,I slowly picked him up and brought him out of the bushes.
I took that little fellow home ,cleaned him up ,gave first aid and fed him warm milk. I was happy the wounds were not deep. He was very scared and trembled at the slightest noise . A cozy bed, comfort and protection was all he needed. He snuggled in the bed I made and seemed at ease after a little while. I looked at him closely as he slept peacefully . A cute little bundle of white and brown fur, drooping ears that almost covered his closed eyes. My heart warmed up to him and I thanked God for the good sense that prevailed over me to stop and save him.
I woke up next morning to a soft lick on my hand. As I opened my eyes I saw him standing by my bedside, wagging his little tail and looking at me with those innocent eyes. I patted his head and picked him up. He snuggled close to me as if he knew he was safe and secure. We formed a bond instantly and deep down in my heart ,I knew I would never give him away.
After a few days of care he was fit and fine ,running around the house . He would sniff in every corner trying to familiarize with his new surroundings. He had dark brown eyes ,brown ears , white and brown fur and his little tail was white, brown at the tip. I decided to name him " Brownie". He seemed to like his name and came running to me merrily . Brownie was a companion I thought I could never have. He changed my life with his presence and I never felt so happy ,content and at peace before. His arrival in my lonely home gave me new hope. Its true when they say that "Dogs are mans Best Friend. " A friend that gives selfless love and wants only love in return because "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself " .
