Land of the Dead Volume 1 Part 4
David woke up to the sound of people arguing. He attempted to get up only to find both of his arms and legs bound by a thick rope. Panic filled him as he looked around looking for the ones responsible. He was inside a room with boarded up windows and a barricaded door. There were 3 people, a woman and 2 men who were currently arguing over each other. David tensed upon seeing their uniforms. The emblem of the Royal army was there for him to see, as clear as day even in the dark room. David began twisting his hands in an attempt to free himself. Thankfully, the other three were too busy arguing to notice that he was awake.
He felt the bindings on his arms loosen and he doubled his efforts. However, he heard the arguing subside and quickly stopped just in time as one of the soldiers turned and looked at him.
"He's awake." the soldier spoke as the the others turned to him as well. David studied the soldiers in front of him. Judging by the uniforms, he deduced that the soldiers belonged to the royal army's Pathfinder unit. It was a unit that specialises in infiltration, espionage and assassinations. David stayed silent as one of the men, a corporal judging by his patch crouched in front of him, holding a rifle. A scowl threatened to appear on David's face as he recognised the as rifle as his own. These soldiers had most likely taken all of his weapons and ammunition.
"So, rebel scum. Where is the rest of your unit?" the man asked. David pursed his lips and stayed silent. The man waited for a few seconds, expecting him to answer before sighing. "Boy, I suggest that you fess up before it gets ugly for you. Incase you haven't noticed, there is no way you can come out on top. You are tied up, unarmed and outnumbered. So it might be in your best interests to tell us, what we need to know." he said. He was met with silence as David kept completely silent.
" Last chance boy. You either tell us what we want to know, or I'll ask private Jon here to throw you out of this room and into the middle of those creatures, trust me your death will be neither quick nor painful" he said as he motioned to his companion, a bulky man at least two heads taller than David. He had brown hair and an alsmost square face. A large scar ran diagonally across his face. Yet David kept silent at first, before his lips morphed into a grin.
" No you won't." David said with a smug expression. "What makes you say that? The corporal asked." Quite simple. If you do throw me out, it means risking the creatures finding out that you are inside. And since this room only has one possible exit albeit barricaded, it means that there would be nowhere for you to escape." David replied.
"Hmmm..... That's true. In that case...." the corporal suddenly pulled out a knife, yanked David forward by dragging his collar and pressed the knife against the latter's neck. "How about I gut you right here. Spare you from your miserable life." the corporal hissed venomously. David felt himself shaking with fear but looked at his would be killer defiantly. He was not going to comply with his enemies. Especially those from the royal army. A few tense moments passed between them as David felt the corporal's blade press harder and harder against his throat. Suddenly, a slender hand grabbed onto the corporal's hand and shocking both both the his and the corporal. It was the woman who was now glaring daggers at the the corporal. "That's enough." she said softly but there was a tone of finality in her voice. This was followed by more tense moments until the corporal sighed and the blade was retracted from David's throat. David let out a sigh of relief only to become tense when the woman crouched beside him. "
It was only now that David was able to look at woman clearly. To his surprise, she was a lieutenant. Yet she looked around his own age. If it were any other woman, David would have been showering her with complements. Alas, the woman in front of him belongs to the royal army. Moreover, the look in her eyes would have dissuaded him anyway.
The woman cleared her throat and said. " Let's try this again. Who are you? What is your mission? And where is the rest of your unit?" David remained silent as the woman crossed her arms waiting for him to answer. "I have a theory." the woman suddenly began. "You are part of a mission to transport chemical weapons into the neutral areas. All you had to do was do it activate the weapons in spefic areas and contaminate them. Following that, you would leave evidence implicating the royals thus successfully gaining the support of the Duke of Wyld and the other nobles who had chose to remain neutral. Am I correct? " The woman asked.
David looked at her like she had a second head. Before he knew it he began speaking." You cannot seriously believe that we are responsible for this."
"Perhaps. But now is not the time to discuss this . Jack, gag him. We're taking him with us to command. He'll spill everything once our boys get their hands on him." The woman glanced at the corporal who in turn, came at David with a dirty piece of rag. Despite the latter's protests, he tied it around his head tightly.
" Alright. We leave tonight. Get yourselves some rest. It's going to be a long night. " the woman spoke has she turned her back at David.
