"Night In The Woods"
The trees in the distance play tricks on my eyes as shadows seem to dance upon the pitch black and umber hues. I stare ahead of me, shaking off the image of her face amidst the dark. I've walked a ways into the woods miles away from my house.
I needed to get away. Though now, as I press on further, my throat welds up with a thick tightness. It's cold. The rigid air battles the skin on my cheeks. It's close to winter, but the first snow hasn't fallen yet and won't for another month or so.
When I make it far enough into the woods that my car's headlights are like a faint candle, I stop to assess my surroundings. There shouldn't be anyone for miles. I scan the trees and brush and gaps in between. This is a good enough spot.
The silence of the night is interrupted by a thud, a distant hooting from an owl in a tree, and the metallic sounds of rocks on my shovel as I dig.
