The Past We Left Behind - Chapter 8
"Where in God's name are you?" Ethan muttered to himself as he walked the quiet streets of Adaburg, desperately searching for Abigail. It was already evening and although it wasn't that cold, a cool breeze was blowing, making it seem like the temperature was 5 degrees. Luckily, Ethan had put on a full zip hoodie before he went looking for Abigail, so his upper body wasn't cold, just his legs.
"I should have put on long pants." He thought, feeling the cool breeze on his skin. Then he remembered that Abigail had rushed out lightly dressed and began to worry even more. He quickened his pace, looking around with the hope that he would catch a glimpse of her somewhere.
After wandering for a while, Ethan's eyes finally caught sight of her in the distance. Abigail was sitting on one of the benches at the beginning of the park and was looking thoughtfully at the floor, while her arms were tightly wrapped around her, as if she was protecting herself from the harsh cold. Ethan's face was filled with relief at finally finding her, but at the same time he was worried to see her like this. He slowly ran towards her, and she turned as soon as she heard his footsteps. When she saw him, sadness flooded Abigail's face even more. She got up from the bench and turned to run away, but Ethan quickly grabbed her arm and stopped her. "Abigail, please. Don't run away again, we're not going to solve anything like this. Let’s talk."
Abigail turned to him. "About what? If you really mean everything you said, then we have nothing to talk about." She said and aggressively pushed his hand away from hers. Ethan's heart sank.
"Abigail…what I said…I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. Adam's words poisoned my mind, I know, I shouldn't have allowed it. I'm really sorry."
Abigail's gaze softened a little and her anger subsided when she saw the sincerity in Ethan's eyes. As she pondered whether to forgive him or not, a cold breeze blew through her, causing her to shiver. She wrapped her arms around herself, and as soon as she did, Ethan instantly took off his hoodie and draped it over her. Abigail looked at him in surprise, feeling a warmth wash over her, easing her shivers.
"I don't want you to freeze because of me." Ethan said honestly, in a gentle voice. Touched by his gesture and the sincerity in his voice, Abigail felt her heart soften more and more, until she realized what it meant for Ethan.
"But now you will be cold." She said worriedly. Ethan gave her a small smile. "Don't worry about it."
They were silent for a few moments, before Ethan broke the silence. "Shall we go home?" He asked in a low gentle voice, pointing a finger in the direction he had come. Abigail nodded and the two started walking.
