Anja carefully explained linear equations to Fran, and Fran tried his best to understand what she was saying. Slowly, from minute to minute, Fran began to grasp the material.
"You're doing great!" Anja encouraged him after he successfully solved another one of the easier problems. Fran smiled contentedly, and Anja added, "Just don't give up! Believe in yourself!"
Fran nodded, and then continued to solve the problems that Anja gave him. Before leaving, she told him, "You're doing great, but if you want to pass the test, you'll have to study even when I'm not here. You know that, right?"
"I know," Fran replied, nodding with understanding. And indeed, because he didn't want to disappoint her, Fran really did study in his free time. Katarina was proud of him, as was Anja. Every time they saw each other, Anja would check his knowledge and be more and more impressed.

The next day, as Mateo and Fran walked home from school together, Mateo complained, "I'm so hungry. Lunch isn't ready yet. My mom is coming home from work later today. I'm going to die of hunger."
Fran chuckled and shrugged. "It's your fault for not knowing how to cook."
"It's not funny. I'm going to die of hunger," Mateo replied in a tone that let Fran know he wasn't joking. Fran sighed quietly, and then suggested to his friend, "Well then, come to my house for lunch."
Mateo's face suddenly changed from sadness to surprise, and then to a smile. "Really?" he asked excitedly. Fran nodded. "Yes, you'll be thrilled. My mom and grandma cook really well."
"That's great then! Thank you, my friend!" Mateo thanked him.
"No problem, man," Fran replied, and the two of them continued walking.
