Tale from a Soldier's heart ♥
July 26, 1999
“Officers”, the yelling sound of the instructor pierced our ears and turned on our blood on fire. We woke from sleep, barely we could recognize the time, 1:15 am.
Not knowing what the day has for us, happily we went to freshen up. I still remember, the course mates imitating the instructor, it was so perfect that even the instructor won’t have done it so well.
By 2 am, we were gathered in the parade ground. An unusual fear grew in my heart, not showing it on my face, stood front to lead the parade. After our drill practice we sat for a break. The hallucination of fear again grew in my mind, thinking on it I just looked around my colleagues. Few sleeping tiredly and some chatting, it was 4:30 am. We were called for the morning drink and we had a good time in the mess hall.
The announcement from the intercom made me fear a lot, I was still controlling not to show it on my face and made my steps as instructed. By 5 am, we assembled near the flag post where I came to know that we were surrounded by the terrorists of XXX. With not much panic and fear we were asked to be prepared for the cold war. But the fear in me said “it is not going to be a cold war rather a blood war”.
We, the commandos of 26 AAA regiment, signed the voluntary form owing to protect the NATION and the INDIANS before the start of the war. We were split up into team of 4 . Blowing in the wind, I let my team alpha, consisting of 5 soldiers under me. I was so cautious to not to lose any of my team members and made my instructions carefully. The navigations made by us were so perfect that we found the location of the terrorists without much delay. We set a plot for them, unfortunately as we guessed it didn’t happen. The fear again grew inside me but this time I didn’t give it a chance to control me. We made plan A, the probability of the result in favor of us was negative, and my team started losing hope. But I was sure that the plan A will fetch was success, so I broke the navigator and forced my team in a situation to succeed the opponents and find the way back to the camp. It was like “do or die" scenario.
It was 8:39 am, waiting for the group of devils to fall into our trap. Our shoes tied, guns loaded, eyes searching for the target, confidence overloaded we started our mission.
The opponents were large in number, though we are 5 we were not lesser to them. The magazines were fed continuously and fired so many bullets, differing by our actions, we were united by the common aim, “protect INDIA”. The war continued for another 30 mins, we were highly injured, still we fought against them, and the explosives carried by us fetched some deaths of the enemy troop.
We were almost at the end of the battle, I ,being fired on my shoulders ,leaned over the tree and took myself time to realize what we were left with. I managed to find my teammates, they were injured very badly. Feeling heavy in the heart, I found one of my team mate lying died on the river of blood. Carrying his body , leaving the blood strains back all the way we walked to our camp by 9:35 am. On seeing our arrival the medical emergencies were made and took a great care of us.
It took 6 hrs for me to come back to my normal state. On opening my eyes ,I saw my major sir congratulating for killing 14 terrorists. Then I asked him the reason for the happiness of XXX. My sir paused for a moment and revealed that 9 of the Indian soldiers lost their lives including one from team alpha . On hearing this tears rolled down my cheeks and i looked at the day and said " I don't know whether I should be happy for the victory or sad for my coursemates , anyway It will be unfair for me to forget this gift ".

I helped to find the bodies of other coursemates who were killed during the war and made the due respect for them. The most difficult situation for a soldier is not being injured in a battle, it is conveying the death news of the soldier to their family members.
