A Tale of Ten Brothers - Act III
The next morning was no morning at all. The night's sun wore Terrence ragged, his eyes sunken and lips dry. He still was collecting his thoughts when he came home to the pink fairy, Ala, dead in his bed. There was a blood-soaked pillow and blanket there with no sign of forced entry.
Terrence couldn't believe what happened and to the extent that what Maeve said was true. Two things she said certainly did happen:
Someone was out to kill him and Maeve's friend died, or worse, sacrificed. Something sinister was afoot, something unexpected for this little farm and town of Nothere.
A few hours before the mocking sun scraped violently against the night's horizon, Terrence and the innkeeper came to the front door of the farm. After a couple of minutes from the innkeeper knocking at the door, Dado - yes, the brother that no one cared about - opened it. There was a tiredness in Dado's eyes of the likes no man had seen before. It looked like he fought 10,000 battles and lost every one.
"Terrence..." he said in a silky, low voice, "Why are you out so late?"
The innkeeper was shocked to see such a disheveled man. He saw the trauma in his eyes, thinking he must have been in the war. He quickly saluted,
"Sir," he quipped, "This boy has had a long night. He took off after a fairy, ending up in the forest, and had the witch chasing him out after he rejected her prophesies."
Dado stared distantly at the innkeeper.
"You're talking to the wrong guy.", spewed Terrence, trying to stay out of eye contact with his brother, "He doesn't live in this world."
The rigidity slowly dissipated from the innkeeper as he examined Dado more...
