Among 12 jyotirlingams(Jyotir Lingam means the Radiant Sign of The Almighty Shiv) The MAHAKAL LINGAM is the only Optimal lingam ~~as said.

कहते हैं कि 'आकाशे तारकं लिंगं पाताले हाटकेश्वरम्। भूलोके च महाकालो लिंड्गत्रय नमोस्तु ते।।' अर्थात आकाश में तारक शिवलिंग, पाताल में हाटकेश्वर शिवलिंग तथा पृथ्वी पर महाकालेश्वर ही मान्य शिवलिंग है।

दूषण असुर ने रुला भक्तो को

जब वो दौड़ा मारने
शिवभक्तों को था
अपनी एक गुहार पर ही
बुलाया उन्होंने शिव शंकर डमरूवालेको था।

As soon as he approached
to kill shiv devotees
With their one petition
they called their lord The Supreme SHIVA

सदाशिव का आना,दुष्ट का मारा जाना
यह विशेष तो था
किन्तु दुर्लभ बात तो हुई तब , जब
उज्जनियो की पुकार पर
उनकी एक गुहार पर
स्वयंभू रूप में
ज्योतिर्लिंग स्वरूप में
हुए विराजमान शिव
महाकाल के रूप में।

The arrival of shiva and
the death of the demon
is special
But the rare occasion happened
was that
on the request of his devotees
Shivji manifested himself
in the form of MAHAKAL
to stay their forever in the form of Lingam.

सलिला शिप्रा तट के आगे
उज्जैन के राजा विराजे
तृतीय दक्षिणमुखी ज्योतिर्लिंग
की अजब ही है बात
श्रद्धा से किये गए
दर्शन मात्र से धुल जाते हर पाप।

कर लिए दर्शन
बाबा महाकाल के आपने
भूल गए जूना महाकाल को
तो बात न जमेगी चोखी
अधूरी रह जायेगी शुभ यात्रा है आपकी

Unfinished journey to see Juna Mahakal – Visiting Juna Mahakal is also necessary to visit Mahakal’s temple or else the philosophy of Mahakal is considered incomplete

Sri Swapneshwar Mahadev Temple also comes within the range of Mahakaleshwar Temple, where devotees worship Shiva as Mahakala and ask them to fulfill their dreams.
It is believed that Mahadev is Swapneshwar here and Shakti is Swapneshwari.

धर्मनष्ट करनेवालो ठेकेदारों ने।

There is also a kunda (tank) in the premises called Koti Tirtha that has been built in the sarvatobhadra style. On the path from the stairs of the kunda to the temple you will come across several images of the original structure of the temple, reflecting its grandeur during the period of the Paramaras (9th and 14th centuries).

कालिदास के मेघदूत
में भी वर्णित इसके किस्से
माँ हरसिद्धि-गजानन बिन
अधूरे है जो हिस्से।

Kalidas,the great scholar also describes about the beauties of Mahakaleshwar temple in his book Meghadoot.

स्वयंभू स्वरूप है
अकाल मृत्यु टल जाए
बात यह यहां प्रचलित है।

The presiding deity, Lord Shiva in the lingam form is believed to be Swayambhu, deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself as against the other images and lingams that are ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti.

सिंहस्थ की महिमा तो
गाये कैसे कोई सरकार
गंगा स्नान से दर्शन तक
अद्भुत है हर बात।

According to Hindu mythology, Vishnu dropped drops of amrita (the drink of immortality) at four places, while transporting it in a kumbha (pot). These four places, including Ujjain, are identified as the present-day sites of the Kumbh Mela."

हो 12 वर्षों में एक बार
कहा कहा से न जाने
आए भक्त अपार।।

कोई चलता आए कोई लँगड़ा आए
देखने तुम्हे कर्तार,,
खाली हाथ कोई ना जाए
बात बड़ी ये सरकार ( महाकाल)।।

कृपा आपकी
है ही इतनी असरदार।
क्या कहूँ ,क्या क्या कहूँ
इनकी कथाएँ ही इतनी अपरंपार।।

एक दिन (श्रावण-भादौ मास)
उज्जैन भ्रमण को जाते महाकाल
इन्हें देखने
आइएगा ज़रूर एक बार।

मंदिरों की नगरी उज्जयिनी,
अवन्तिका में स्वागत है आपका
हो अगर दर्शन की अभिलाषा
तो हाथ जोड़े
पधारियेगा ज़रूर एक बार।।।
