CASE STUDY: THE POWERFUL AND INDEPENDENT NATURE OF THE GIRL-CHILD
In the previous edition of FEMALE EMPOWERMENT series, our focus was on Education as a main source of FEMALE EMPOWERMENT.
Now, our focus will be on the POWERFUL AND INDEPENDENT NATURE OF THE GIRL-CHILD. Though it’s a general believe that females are weak and powerless but I’ll tostrongly be opposing this and also giving a world known and historical example of strong, independent and powerful women without whom, their various nations won’t have attained the height it has today.
Firstly, we have Queen Mary 1 of England, Queen Victoria of England, Queen Elizabeth the first, Queen Elizabeth the second, Catherine The Great of the Russian Empire amongst many more.
I’ll be talking about;
CATHERINE THE GREAT
Catherine Alexeievna Romanova was the Empress of the Russian Empire, she was commonly known as Catherine the Great. She was Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796—the country's longest-ruling female leader. She came to power following a coup d'état that she organized—resulting in her husband, Peter III , being overthrown. Under her reign, Russia was revitalized; it grew larger and stronger, and was recognized as one of the great powers of Europe and Asia.
EARLY LIFE
Catherine was born in Alt-Stettin, Pomerania
Kingdom of Prussia (now Szczecin , Poland) as Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg. Her father, Christian August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst , belonged to the ruling German family of Anhalt but held the rank of a
Prussian general in his capacity as governor of the city of Stettin. Two of her first cousins became Kings of Sweden : Gustav III and Charles XIII . In accordance with the custom then prevailing in the ruling dynasties of Germany , she received her education chiefly from a French governess and from tutors. Catherine was regarded as a tomboy and was known by the nickname Fike.
Her childhood was quite uneventful. She once wrote to her correspondent Baron Grimm: "I see nothing of interest in it." Although Catherine was born a princess, her family had very little money. Her rise to power was supported by her
mother's wealthy relatives, who were both nobles and royal relations.
The 300 or so states of the Holy Roman Empire, many of them quite small and powerless, made for a highly competitive political system as the various princely families fought for advantage over each other, often via political marriage.For the smaller German princely families, an advantageous marriage was one of the best means of advancing their interests, and the young Sophie was groomed throughout her childhood to be the wife of some powerful ruler in order to improve the position of the von Anhalt family. Besides her native German, Sophie became fluent in French, the lingua franca of European elites in the 18th century. The young Sophie received the standard education for an 18th-century German princess with a concentration upon learning the etiquette expected of a lady, French and Lutheran theology.
Catherinian Era
During her reign, Catherine reformed the administration of Russian guberniyas, and many new cities and towns were founded on her orders. An admirer of Peter the Great, Catherine continued to modernize Russia along Western European lines.
Catherine also extended by some 520,000 square kilometres (200,000 sq mi) the borders of the Russian Empire, absorbing New Russia , Crimea, Northern Caucasus , Right-bank Ukraine , Belarus, Lithuania, and Courland at the expense, mainly, of two powers—the Ottoman Empire and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth .
Catherine's foreign minister , Nikita Panin (in office 1763–81), exercised considerable influence from the beginning of her reign. A shrewd statesman, Panin dedicated much effort and millions of rubles to setting up a "Northern Accord" between Russia, Prussia , Poland, and Sweden, to counter the power of the Bourbon–
Habsburg League. When it became apparent that his plan could not succeed, Panin fell out of favour and Catherine had him replaced with Ivan Osterman (in office 1781–97).
Catherine agreed to a commercial treaty with Great Britain in 1766, but stopped short of a full military alliance. Although she could see the benefits of Britain's friendship, she was wary of Britain's increased power following its victory in the Seven Years' War, which threatened the
European balance of power .
The period of Catherine the Great's rule, the
Catherinian Era , is considered the Golden Age of Russia. The Manifesto on Freedom of the Nobility , issued during the short reign of Peter III and confirmed by Catherine, freed Russian nobles from compulsory military or state service. Construction of many mansions of the nobility, in the classical style endorsed by the Empress, changed the face of the country. She enthusiastically supported the ideals of the Enlightenment and is often regarded as an
enlightened despot . As a patron of the arts she presided over the age of the Russian Enlightenment , including the establishment of the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens, the first state-financed higher education institution for women in Europe.
Let us consider the roles Catherine the great played in the development of the Russian Empire and the enlargement of its territories and then we’ll understand that females are not weak, that we are powerful and of course we can bring a man down on his begging ( I won’t lay much emphasis on this). The fact that females may not be as strong as males physically cannot be overlooked but this doesn’t mean that Females should be regarded as Nobodies.
Have we observed that when women loose their husbands, in most cases, they make up their mind to live solely for their children instead of running into the arms of another man. They choose to be independent and struggle single-handedly to bring up their kids, but the men (widowers) get re-married giving excuses like, “My daughters need a mother to teach them how to take care of their homes in the future”, now don’t get me wrong here. Am not saying that it’s wrong for the men to get re-married, am just trying to let you know the strength level of the females especially in cases where their loved ones are involved. If you truly want to know the full capability of a female, try hurting something or someone dear to her and then you’ll see the power of Mother Hen.
CONCLUSION
In our world today, females become astronauts, engineers, Soldiers and even drivers so the primitive believe that females will end up in the Kitchen at the end of it all should be abolished because it’s not the gender that matters but the mindset, thinking frame and mental soundness of the person concerned hence, we should develop and imbibe positive mindsets.
Having said that, STAY POSITIVE and THINK BIG cause that’s what matters.
