I Built Myself A Fire

I built myself a fire
That only I can put out
With flames that never expire
So I never have any doubt
Everyday I found some wood
To keep my fire burning

I did everything I could
To keep myself from turning
Then one day there you were
Ready to knock down the flames
Tempting with your evil lure
Looking for someone to play your games
You walked through the fiery smoke
Barefooted on the charcoal and all
You were so hot it made me choke

I couldn't breath as I'd stumble and fall
I was right were you wanted me
In the palm of your hands
Following you around like a puppy
Finding it hard to understand

I swore I'd never fall again
That's why I built myself a fire
After the way the last time had end
I swore not to believe any more liars
Somehow you made me turn
Into a shallow, doubting man
The more games you played, I got burned
As I lost my confidence doing everything I can

I built myself a fire
To keep from people like you
Though the flames you desire
They didn't stop you from walking through
Now I can't put out my own flames
You took everything away
Playing all your selfish games
Dousing my fire with your evil spray
You took all my wood

Built yourself a fire with it
Then burned all my good
And turned me into your puppet
When you were done you left me here
After I took all your blows and bashes
You put my fire out everywhere
Now I'm nothing but your used up ashes.
