SNEAK PEEK!

'So sorry you and Ella got separated, Kayla. But don't worry. You'll be together soon enough.'

I jumped up to alert my parents, but then my phone ringing shattered the silence. Against my better judgement and definitely against every instinct in my body, I hit answer.

"Hello, Kayla." A distorted voice broke across the line. "You're looking lovely this evening."

I started to hang up and rush out the door, but that voice stopped me. " Stay where you are, Kay. Or your sister will pay the price."

My feet skidded to a halt. The man was watching me. I was suddenly heavily aware of the window behind me, hanging wide open. Would he climb through and grab me?

He chuckled darkly, as if reading my mind. "Don't worry, you're safe for now. I just wanted to let you know that you wouldn't have to worry about Ella for much longer. Soon you'll be chained up right beside her."

This statement should have caused my blood to turn to ice. But instead heat surged through my veins, wiping away every ounce of fear for myself. "Who the heck are you and what have you done with my sister?" My voice held an edge of steel even I was not accustomed to.

"Don't worry about that, you'll know soon enough." I fought to keep myself from trembling. I was not going to let this maniac know I was scared.

"Don't count on it." I spat, my voice dripping with venom.

He cackled, and a tremor raced up my spine. " What a feisty little thing. How come you never act like this when I'm around?"

So this pervert knew me. "I tend not to show my true personality to psychopaths."

"How adorable. So here's what you're going to do, Kay. You will walk straight to your bedroom and lock the door. There's a note taped to your window. You will leave your phone on your bed and get the note. Once you have it I'll hang up with you. But I am warning you, this conversation and what's written on that paper stays between us. If you say a word to your parents, the police, or Luke about it, then you will be informed of the location of your sister's body. Is that understood?"

Okay, so anybody with common sense would have agreed to whatever he said to protect their family. But what did I do? Well, you might say I thought like a cop. Never comply with the suspect in question without knowing the bargain is possible.

"Okay," I said. "I won't say a word. But I want to hear Ella's voice. For all I know you've already killed her and you're just trying to get me, too. Put her on."

He blew out a hot breath. "Fine. Bring her over!" He shouted into the background. Seconds later, a girlish voice sounded in my ear.

"Kay?"

My heart plummeted into my stomach. She had clearly been crying. God, how I wanted to wrap my hands around this creep's throat and snap his neck. But now wasn't the time and here wasn't the place to test him.

"Listen, Ella." I said, trying to sound calm. "We're going to get you out of there. Just hang tight and think of hugging Mr. Cuddles, okay?"

She stiffled a sob at the mention of her favorite teddy bear, but before she could speak Mr. Snotnose took the phone back. "Alright. You heard her. Now do as I say. Don't try anything or I'll put a bullet in her skull."

Slowly, I walked to my bedroom, locking the door behind me. "Lay your phone down and get the note." The voice ordered. Ice chilled my spine, but I did as he said. A small evelope was fastened to the outside of my window. I reached out and grabbed it, stepping away as fast as I could. I heard my phone click off. The man had hung up.

I opened the envelope with trembling hands. What was inside almost caused me to black out. It was the headband Ella had worn this morning when she disappeared.

And it was covered with blood.
