Paw Pack: Chapter One
You could hear the man’s grunt and heavy pants as he carried the bag of dog food down the hall of the animal shelter. He walked past the lady at the desk, his legs shaking.

“Ummm, I think you need a good workout buddy.” Said the lady at the desk. The man ignored her continuing to struggle, his twig arms shaking, he finally came into the room with a row of dogs all in their kennels. They all started to wag their tails.

“Foods here!” A Dalmatian barked. The man grunted as he poured the food into the bowls.”WHOA!” The man tripped and fell onto the floor dropping the dog food as it splattered everywhere.

“Oh my gosh!” A rottweiler groaned. “He does this every day!”

“Oh well.” A Poodle said. “Might as well not let this go to the waist.” The dogs all trotted out of their kennels and ate the dog food off of the floor. Cory, an energetic Corgi, ran out of his kennel as fast as he could, he leaped up on top of the man and licked his face.

“You ok?” Cory asks, wagging his tail.

The man groaned as he slowly sat up, he looked around at the mess he had caused. Cory hopped off the man, he ate some of the dog food on the floor, he walked up to the bag of dog food which was now empty. He saw a gray wolf on the bag, with blue piercing eyes. His tail wagged.

“I always dreamed about being a wolf!” Cory said.

All the dogs groaned.

“Oh, Cory,” Says Daisy the Poodle. “Please don’t even start with that nonsense, always fantasizing!”

“Here we go again!” Says Coco the Dalmatian. “Always telling us how you wish to be some wolf, not gonna happen buddy!”

The man got up and scooped up the mess. Cory surveyed the man as he picked up the dog food bag, still staring at the wolf on the front.

“Wolves don’t actually look like {that}, do they?”

Cory responds, his tail dancing. “WEll, if they do, they look cool!”

“A new dawn, a new day!” All the dogs heard a dark voice, they looked to see the Black lab, Shadow. Shadow chuckled as he saw the bits of dog food on the floor. “Well, at least you helped him clean up his mess.

“Morning shadow!” Said Daisy.

“Morning!” All the dogs said.

The man opened the back door to let the dogs run out in the yard. Cory rushed to the door he ran outside to see all the dogs communing with each other. Cory stood in the middle of the yard, by himself.

“Hey check it!” Said a Rottweiler. “It’s that dog who thinks he’s a wolf. HAHAHAHAHAH!” All the dogs joined in laughing with him. Cory glanced at the dogs who were laughing at him, he sighed.

“Don’t let them get you buddy…” Shadow says as he walks up to Cory. Cory didn’t say anything back, he seemed to be lost in his own thoughts.

“What does a wolf have…that we don’t…?” He says out loud, asking Shadow. Shadow sat down beside Cory, he straightened his posture.

“Um…uh…”

“What’s that thing called?” Asks Cory. “Where wolves stick together in a group…no a FLOCK!” Cory’s tail starts to wag. Shadow lifted his paw in confusion.

“Um…I think that’s for birds”

“I GOT IT! A PACK!”

Shadow rolled his eyes. “Look buddy, I’m trying to help you…and right now-it's not working!”

Cory hopped up, he lifted his head and tried to howl, but all that came out was an ear wretched screech. Shadow winced, it caught all the dogs attention. “SHUT UP, BOZO!” One of the rottweilers said, throwing a rock at Cory, Coy whimpers as he immediately went quiet. Shadow stood up and barked at the Rottweiler, defending Cory. The other dogs backed Shadow up, showing their support for their fellow furry friend. Cory looked up at Shadow, his eyes filled with gratitude.

“Thanks, Shadow,” Cory said softly. Shadow nodded, giving Cory a reassuring pat on the back.

“Don’t listen to them, Cory,” Shadow said. “You may not be a wolf, but you’re still a part of our pack.”

Cory’s tail wagged, a smile spreading across his face. He felt a sense of belonging and acceptance among his fellow shelter dogs.

“I KNOW!” Shouts Cory! “I can make a pack!”

Shadow groans as he runs inside not wanting to hear what Cory has to say. Cory ran after him. After a long day they went back I side to see their bowls filled with water and more food. Cory stood up, catching every dog's attention.

“I have an announcement to make!” Says Cory. All the dogs groan. “With my strong wits, and my courage, I am now In charge of the new wolf pack! With Shadow the black lab.”

“WHAT!?” Shadow screeched

“Daisy the poodle.”

“HUH!?” Daisy exclaimed.

“Brutus the rottweiler!”

“Cory, you can’t just make up a wolf pack,” Shadow said, shaking his head.

“But why not?” Cory asked, his tail wagging excitedly. “We can be like a family, sticking together and watching out for each other!”

The other dogs exchanged glances, unsure of what to make of Cory’s idea. But as they looked at the gleam in his eyes and the sincerity in his voice, they couldn’t help but feel a sense of unity and warmth.

“Alright, Cory,” Shadow said with a sigh. “If it means that much to you, we’ll be your wolf pack.”

Cory grinned from ear to ear, feeling a sense of fulfillment and belonging like never before. The other dogs joined in, wagging their tails and barking in agreement. Cory chuckled. “We escape tonight!”
