Marcus: "Isn't it pointless?" he said, with that cold expression on his face again. "Making connections only leads to weakness."
When I heard those words, I felt both anger and pity. It pained me that he had hidden such a vulnerable side behind such a cold mask, and at the same time, it made me want to know more.
Rose: "You're trying to convince yourself of that," I said, my voice carrying a hint of challenge. "Perhaps your real fear is trusting someone and being disappointed. After all, someone who is used to shadows avoids the light."
Marcus: "This is pointless talk," he said, cutting me off sharply. "We should go back."
