SET YOUR LIFE ON A DIFFERENT PATH
Friday afternoons are for mentorship and career talks at ABC high school. The counselor for the ss3 class was unavoidably absent on that faithful Friday and miss Angela was asked to take the session with the students. The principal did not want the students to miss any career session so they won't be idle doing nothing and most importantly because they would be leaving the secondary setting to a larger environment. He wanted to be make sure that the students were not half baked and that they were well prepared for the journey ahead of them.
Angela was just a spinster of 23 years of age and an only child to her parents. Her parents had been divorced since she was a little girl and her mum had done a lot of work in raising her. She graduated with first class in Early childhood education and resolved to become a teacher but her mum had nothing against her choice of career unlike some parents who would not like their children to choose teaching as a profession.
When she stepped into the classroom, she became anxious and didn't know what to talk to the students about as she herself was young and had no experience in counseling. After several conflicting thoughts in her head, she decided to share her mother's personal story. She greeted the students and told them she has a story for them. Immediately, they paid rapt attention to her and she started her narration.
'My mum was a very smart and intelligent girl while growing up. Her brilliance is exceptional and second to none. Her teachers loved her, her mates respected her and her juniors looked up to her. She was doing so well in her studies and her parents were proud of her. She proceeded so fast in her educational pursuit.
When she was about entering the senior secondary school, she was confused of what choice to make. It was the time when students were separated into different departments. She hadn't made a choice yet and didn't know what department she really wanted to go to. She had a flair for fashion design and creation, it was obvious because she had made the most beautiful dress for their Home-economics project in Junior secondary. She wanted to go for the Arts but then she discovered that most of the people who represented the school were from the Sciences and most of her educational rivals too were signing up for the Sciences. She had no choice than to do the same because she didn't want to be seen as a weakling because students in the Sciences were considered the most intelligent.
Her prowess sharpened and she continued to excel in her studies. In her final year in secondary school, she was made the senior girl prefect of the school and she emerged the overall best student amongst her peers. She wasn't sure of the career path she wanted to choose but she concluded that she had to choose a prestigious and a brain tasking one so people can continue to admire her intelligence. She decided that she was going to be a pharmacist.
She wrote the matriculation exam and gained admission to study Pharmacy. Her first year in the university was easy as the courses were just an extension of her secondary school's Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics but she started to face problems in the second year because she did more of her departmental courses. She seemed not to be interested in any of the lecturers' teachings. She found it difficult to understand because her brain was not working with her heart.
She saw Pharmacy as a burden to her life because she couldn't comprehend simple lessons. She cried day and night and questioned herself as to where her secondary school self went. Hadn't she graduated as the overall best student in secondary school? She was confused and unhappy. She started drifting into depression by the days. At the end of her second year, she managed to stay in second class upper division against the first class she had in her first year.
Her world was crumbling and she didn't know what to do, the third year was even worse because lectures began to get more intense.
It was at a program that she got the chance to read a book that gave her courage to discover the person she was actually meant to be. She went to her parents and explained things to them. She told them she was not going to continue studying Pharmacy and explained her reasons amidst tears. Fortunately for her, her parents were learned, they gave her the listening ears she needed and asked her what she wanted to do. She said she would like to go into fashion design. They respected her choice and enrolled her in a fashion institute. She did very well and became a renowned fashion designer. She has her own brand now and it is blooming so well'.
Angela ended her narration and even the students knew her mother because she made the school's uniforms and dresses. She noticed the puzzled looks on their faces and immediately said; 'This does not implies that you shouldn't go to school or that education is not good, it is but not everyone is destined to go to school or even become successful with their education. We all have different paths to take. We can't do the same thing or be similar in every aspects of our lives, it would make the world such a boring place to live in. Sometimes, taking a different path is the best way to find happiness and fulfillment.Taking a leap of faith and pursuing your true passion can lead to a much happier and more fulfilling life. Even if it's scary or difficult, it can be worth it in the end'.
IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AND PASSIONS.YOU OWE NOBODY AN EXPLANATION FOR DOING THINGS THE WAY YOU WANT IT OR LIVING YOUR LIFE ACCORDING TO YOUR PASSION. EVEN SMALL CHANGES CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE AND SOMETIMES, THOSE CHANGES LEAD TO AMAZING THINGS.
