COVID 19 OUTBREAK AND THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY – EFFECTS, CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS - Ikechukwu Joshua I.
What will be the fate of the transportation industry within and after the next six months if the COVID 19 pandemic continues? This is an important question that every sector of the economy must provide answers to in order to stay relevant in this time and during the post covid 19 era.
In December, 2019, several similar cases of respiratory disorder surfaced in Wuhan, China that raised concern for both the Chinese government and the world at large. After several laboratory findings, the disease corona virus disease (abbreviated as COVID 19) was officially identified and described as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS2)
On January 30, 2020, the outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International concern. Ever since, cases of the outbreak have been recorded in 215 countries, areas or territories with 3,759,967 cases and 259,474 confirmed deaths as at May 8, 2020 according to a release by the World Health Organization.
The virus has thus far disrupted activities in different countries of the world. The concerns raised cut across the Health, Religious, Academic, Transportation, Business and Agricultural sectors to mention a few.
Nigeria’s economy isn’t an exemption as the country has since experienced disruptions in both business and non business activities which altogether have impacted the economy negatively. By May 8, 2020, the country had recorded 3526 COVID 19 cases with 107 deaths. The government of the federation and the leaders of different sectors in the country have set out to strategically repositioning and equipping of the various arms of government and the sectors respectively. Some of the measures taken by the government include but is not limited to: total lockdown of states affected by the pandemic, distribution of palliatives to affected communities and sensitization of the public especially as it has to do with maintaining social distancing and use of preventive equipments like hand sanitizers and nose masks. This however is not without challenges as the cases of the dreaded virus infection keeps increasing.
