Jolly Memories
#WritcoStoryPrompt6
I can never forget the joyous days of my childhood, especially the summer when all, we did was swim in the river or lie on it's edge and on consecutive or alternate days we heard a ting ting a mesmerizing bell ringing across the alleys & a sweet fragrance looming in the air.....
And in a minute or two we would see an ice cream seller making his way down the alleys towards the bank of the Barak river, where we all were gladly waiting for him -talkative & a story teller, a small round pleasant man with wrinkly pink face & milky white flowing hairs, just like Santa.... he smiled & in a sing song voice wishing us a merry day....he use to open his magical casket which he had brought along and with delight we use to watch the parpharnelia of casket being unfolded ...
delightful homemade rainbow flavours,
rose bar, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate & lip smacking tuti fruti,..... And tantalizing mango, choco bic ...... And the coffee bricks which heart desired in drenching summer of scanty rains & many more flavours,
beyond kids imagination ..... with marvellous names and tastes...
Hearing the ting....ting
Many more kids use to slide down the hill ... Just like a ballistic missile pacing towards it's target..... .......
Crossing the maze alleys.....and making their way towards the sandy shores...And the old ice cream man with Santa whiskers used to smile
handing us all our favourite ..delicacies.... Chuski, melon, orange, cola, .......
We use to gulp them down in our gargantuan stomachs, just like a crocodile.....
.. Two, three, four,
we ate in a day.......
..... below our muzzles ,whiskers of rainbow forming around.. We laughed at each others foamy whiskers.... enjoyed the best ice creams of the world with the stories of jins, ghosts, monsters, and the Darth Vader appearance of Bathynomous Raksasa, the land of celestial beings, story of Airavath, Pinaka,Tusliji and Lords and Gods of heaven....all and all recounted by the ice cream.....Once, he told us, all kids gathered around him that -" God helps those who have faith in his omnipresence & so dont forget to seek god's blessings when you start, thank god for your life & for your achievements",and from that day we were more devout, something which I believe till today....his stories left a lasting impression on us just like a meteor leaving it's impression & carving out beautiful crater lakes, sea breeze use to carry the stories narrated by ice cream man to far of lands & to heaven and surely gods would have showered their blessings upon him, .....
giving us the change the old man with Santa milky hairs ..use to smile at our promises
.of buying marvels of ice creams, "Hahaha"! In a sing song tone he replied -" it's possible whenever I arrives next ", may be tomorrow or day after tomorrow, but don't worry I will always fulfill your wish,"with this...
...taking farewell for the day, he used to whisk away ting ting ting with casket of magic,
trailed by childern who were eager to meet him again...& again.
...... Just like Santa being toured around the town...he used to drive down,
Then & Still,
I ponder about his beady eyes and that pleasant face, wondering ..if it is was a golden time of his life with kids around to share his story & satisfaction and supercilious ice creams, but surely it was our golden period to devour the mythology with delightful ice creamscreams, curiosity entangled us with books at an early age and till today people call me a Bibliophile!
