Breast Milk Good For Daddy Too
Pediatricians have long understood the health benefits of breast milk for infants. Now new studies show that breast milk is good for Daddy too.

In a study conducted at the Roberta T. Flynn School of Pediatrics at Harvard University, researchers discovered that men who regularly drank breast milk were in better physical and emotional health than those who didn't. "These men were more physically active than their counterparts overall. They were also much more likely to achieve or exceed their target heart rate," said Dr. Ronald Lahey, who headed the study.

Researchers also found that breast milk drinkers were in better emotional health, too. "They tended to be happier and better able to deal with disappointments," Lahey observed. Researchers found that these men had higher levels of endorphins in their brain, which Lahey partially credits for these findings. "They were basically in a state of euphoria. It was almost impossible to wipe the smiles from their faces."

The women in this study were also in better physical and emotional health. "Actually," said Lahey, "women whose partners drank their milk from their breast had even higher levels of endorphins than women whose partners drank from a glass." There was statistically no difference in the men regarding drinking from the breast or from a glass.

The study also suggests that breast milk drinking may help increase the couple's fertility. The women whose partners drank their breast milk became pregnant with their next baby an average of five months earlier than the other women in the study. "That surprised us the most," Lahey noted. "We hadn't been expecting to see fertility influenced by this. That's something we're going to look at more closely in the next study."
